Disaster Deployment information

What is disaster deployment?

Disaster deployment refers to the process of sending trained personnel and resources to areas affected by natural or man-made disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, or large-scale accidents. Professionals involved in disaster deployment, such as emergency responders, medical teams, or relief workers, are responsible for providing immediate aid, coordinating rescue operations, and supporting recovery efforts. The goal is to minimize the impact of the disaster, assist affected communities, and help restore normalcy as quickly as possible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in disaster deployment?

To thrive in Disaster Deployment, you need strong emergency response knowledge, crisis management abilities, and often certifications such as FEMA ICS or first aid/CPR. Familiarity with incident management systems, communication devices, and mapping or logistics software is typically required. Outstanding soft skills include resilience, adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication under pressure. These competencies enable rapid, coordinated, and effective responses to crises, ensuring safety and support for affected communities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in disaster deployment roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Disaster Deployment often encounter rapidly changing conditions, resource limitations, and high-stress environments. Adapting quickly to evolving situations, coordinating with multiple agencies, and maintaining clear communication are critical skills. Building resilience through regular training, participating in simulation exercises, and fostering strong teamwork can help address these challenges and ensure effective response during real-world deployments.

What is the difference between Disaster Deployment vs Emergency Response Technician?

Disaster Deployment involves mobilizing teams to respond to large-scale disasters, focusing on logistics and relief efforts. Emergency Response Technicians primarily provide immediate medical aid at emergency scenes. While both roles require first aid and CPR certifications, Disaster Deployment emphasizes logistical coordination, whereas Emergency Response Technicians focus on medical treatment.

Job description

TELUS Health is empowering every person to live their healthiest life. Guided by our vision, we are leveraging the power of our leading edge technology and focusing on the uniqueness of each individual to create the future of health. As a global-leading health and well-being provider - encompassing physical, mental and financial health - TELUS Health is improving health outcomes for consumers, patients, healthcare professionals, employers and employees.

Join our team and what we'll accomplish together
Join TELUS's dynamic Application Delivery Team as a Deployment Specialist, where you'll play a crucial role in deploying and supporting our retirement and benefits solution for a growing client base. You'll be responsible for building and configuring server environments, managing application deployments, and providing technical support across both cloud and on-premise infrastructures.
This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge Microsoft technologies while supporting critical Retirement and Benefits systems that impact thousands of users. As part of a high-performing team, you'll contribute to our continued expansion while working in an agile, collaborative environment with diverse team members across multiple locations.
We're fully remote; work from anywhere in Canada while collaborating with a high-performing, distributed team. You'll work directly with client IT teams to understand their needs, deliver solutions, and provide support during critical releases and go-lives.
As part of a growing team supporting an expanding client base, you'll contribute to our continued expansion in the retirement and benefits space while working in an agile, collaborative environment with diverse team members across multiple locations.

What you'll do

In a typical week, you'll be building and configuring environments, deploying application updates, executing database tasks, managing Active Directory, and resolving technical issues across the full three-tier stack - database servers, application servers, and web servers. No two weeks look the same.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Environment Management: Build and configure shared and client-specific environments including production, non-production, and disaster recovery systems

  • Server & Application Deployment: Perform server installations, configurations, deployments, and OS upgrades using Microsoft technologies (Windows Server 2012-2019, IIS)

  • Database Administration: Execute SQL Server tasks including database backup/restore, user permissions management, and T-SQL script deployment

  • Active Directory Management: Handle user and group creation, delegation, and domain environment administration

  • System Migration & Upgrades: Lead server and application migrations, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance

  • Automation & Scripting: Develop PowerShell scripts and system reports using SQL Report Builder to streamline operations and reduce manual work

  • Issue Resolution: Triage, analyze, and coordinate resolution of complex technical issues across applications hosted on various platforms

  • Client Support: Provide technical guidance and support to client IT teams, including after-hours support during critical releases and busy periods

  • Documentation & Compliance: Create and maintain technical documentation, service catalogs, and ensure security and performance standards

What makes this work interesting: You'll own the full environment stack not just databases, not just servers, but the complete deployment pipeline. You'll work on client migrations and modernization projects, troubleshoot complex multi-tier issues, and have immediate impact on mission-critical systems. You'll also collaborate with client IT teams on strategic decisions about their infrastructure - this isn't just "keep the lights on," it's helping clients succeed.

What you bring

Must-Have

  • Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent experience) with 3-5+ years of relevant infrastructure and systems administration experience

  • Windows Server Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Windows Server 2012-2019 (installation, configuration, management, and IIS role) - this is foundational to the work

  • Database Expertise: Strong SQL Server management skills, including T-SQL and SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services); experience with backup/restore, user permissions, and script deployment

  • Scripting & Automation: Advanced knowledge of PowerShell scripting; practical experience with VBScript, CMD, and SQL scripting - automation is central to this role

  • Active Directory Management: Experience with Active Directory or LDAP in domain environments

  • Application Architecture Understanding: Knowledge of N-Tier applications utilizing IIS web frontend, .NET services, and SQL Server backend - you don't need to be a developer, but you need to understand how these layers work together

  • Microsoft Azure Experience: Working experience with Microsoft Azure (Storage, ASG, VMs, Azure DB) - hands-on cloud platform skills

  • Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with ability to manage multiple assignments and think systematically

  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with ability to explain complex technical solutions to diverse audiences (client IT teams, team members, stakeholders) - this team runs on knowledge sharing

Nice-to-Have

  • DevOps Tools: Knowledge of Octopus Deploy or Azure DevOps Pipeline

  • Advanced Cloud: Experience with Azure Serverless, Azure Container Instance, Kubernetes, and Docker

  • Multi-Cloud: Familiarity with AWS and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

  • Methodologies: Experience working with Agile methodologies (Scrum and Kanban)

  • .NET Development Familiarity: Practical experience or working knowledge of .NET development (VB.Net or C#) - this helps with application troubleshooting, but isn't required

Salary Range: $65,000 - $89,000.00 USD Annual

Actual total compensation will be determined based on factors such as knowledge, skills, performance and experience. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply, even if the posted salary range doesn't match your expectations. We're open to discussing competitive compensation packages tailored to your experience level and expertise.

TELUS offers rewarding benefits, which may vary per job function, such as:

  • Comprehensive total rewards package highlighting competitive salary and bonus structures, minimum 3 weeks of vacation, and flexible benefits plan to meet the needs of you and your family

  • Flexibility to work in-office, virtually or a combination of both
