How much do disability sport jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for disability sport in California is $25.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $28.70 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are disability sports?

Disability sports, also known as adaptive sports or para sports, are athletic activities specifically designed for individuals with physical, intellectual, or sensory disabilities. These sports include modified rules, equipment, or classifications to ensure fair and inclusive competition. Popular disability sports include wheelchair basketball, para swimming, goalball, and athletics for visually impaired athletes. The main goal is to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and social inclusion among people with disabilities.

What are common challenges faced when organizing disability sport programs, and how can team members effectively address them?

Organizing disability sport programs often involves overcoming challenges such as ensuring accessibility, accommodating a wide range of abilities, and securing adaptive equipment. Team members can address these by collaborating closely with athletes, coaches, and medical professionals to tailor activities, and by staying up-to-date on best practices in adaptive sports. Open communication and flexibility are key, as is fostering an inclusive environment where all participants feel supported and empowered.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disability sports coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disability Sports Coach, you need a solid understanding of adaptive physical education, sports science, and experience working with individuals with disabilities, often supported by relevant coaching certifications. Familiarity with adaptive sports equipment, inclusive coaching techniques, and safety protocols is crucial. Outstanding communication, patience, and empathy are key soft skills for building trust and motivating athletes with diverse needs. These skills ensure accessible, safe, and effective coaching, empowering athletes to reach their full potential.

What is the difference between Disability Sport vs Adaptive Sports Coach?

AspectDisability SportAdaptive Sports Coach

Work EnvironmentSports facilities, community centers, schools, and specialized programsSports fields, gyms, community centers, and outdoor settings
Industry UsageUsed broadly in sports organizations, rehabilitation centers, and community programsPrimarily in sports coaching, recreation departments, and adaptive sports programs

Disability Sport focuses on organizing and promoting sports activities for individuals with disabilities, often involving program development and advocacy. Adaptive Sports Coach, on the other hand, emphasizes coaching and training athletes with disabilities, applying specific techniques to enhance performance and participation. While both roles require knowledge of adaptive sports, Disability Sport roles are more program and policy-oriented, whereas Adaptive Sports Coaches focus on skill development and coaching.
