Job description

ASL-Fluent Community Integration Instructor / Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Full-Time | San Francisco | In-Person / Community-Based
American Sign Language (ASL) fluency required
Pay: $25.00 per hour

Do you want to use your ASL skills to help Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing adults with disabilities become more independent and connected in their communities?

Toolworks is seeking an ASL-fluent Community Integration Instructor / Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide individualized and small-group instruction throughout San Francisco.

Since 1975, Toolworks has partnered with people with disabilities to promote independence, equality, inclusion, and personal satisfaction. In this role, you will support participants as they explore community resources, recreation, volunteer opportunities, employment, transportation, and other activities based on their individual interests and goals.

What You'll Do

You will use American Sign Language throughout your workday to communicate directly with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing participants, provide person-centered instruction, and support choice, self-advocacy, safety, and independence.

Your work may include helping participants navigate public transportation, access community resources, participate in recreational or volunteer activities, build employment-related skills, strengthen community-safety awareness, and develop natural supports.

You will also document participant progress through clear and timely case notes, complete required service and incident reports, and communicate regularly with your supervisor and other members of the participant's support team.

What We're Looking For

Fluency in American Sign Language is required for this position. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively and independently in ASL at a level appropriate for providing direct instruction and support. ASL proficiency may be assessed during the interview process.

Candidates should also have at least two years of experience working with adults with disabilities, preferably in a community-based setting. Experience in direct support, Deaf services, community programs, education, recreation, employment services, or human services is especially valuable.

We're looking for someone who is patient, dependable, organized, comfortable working independently in the community, and able to adapt their teaching approach to different abilities, communication styles, and learning needs. Strong written communication, documentation, time-management, and basic computer skills are also important.

Additional Requirements

First Aid and CPR certification is required and may be obtained within 30 days of hire. This position requires regular travel throughout the community and flexibility based on participant and program schedules.

For assignments that require driving, employees must meet Toolworks' applicable driver's license, driving-record, and automobile-insurance requirements.

Program-required background clearances are completed as part of the hiring process in accordance with applicable requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

Pay: $25.00 per hour

Eligible employees receive paid medical, dental, and vision coverage; a 401(k) employer contribution; paid vacation and sick leave; paid holidays; a birthday holiday; tuition reimbursement; and access to an employee wellness program.

Why Toolworks?

At Toolworks, you'll do meaningful, community-based work that supports people in building skills, making choices, developing relationships, and participating more fully in the communities they choose.

You'll join a team committed to disability inclusion, person-centered services, professional growth, and respect for the people we support.

Toolworks is an equal opportunity employer committed to inclusive hiring and employment practices. We welcome qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, Toolworks will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

In accordance with San Francisco's Fair Chance Ordinance and California's Fair Employment and Housing Act, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
