Strength & Conditioning Coach
Northern California (On-site/ Travel for Events in NorCal & Out-of-State)
Seasonal Position to live in the Bay Area, CA: October 1 - May 31 (8 months) | 1099 Independent Contractor

MLV NorCal is part of Major League Volleyball (MLV), a unified professional women's volleyball league

Position Overview:
The Strength and Conditioning Coach designs and implements evidence-based training programs to enhance strength, power, conditioning, movement quality, injury prevention, and volleyball-specific performance. As an integrated member of the medical and performance team, this role works closely with the Athletic Trainer and team physicians to coordinate athlete care, including injury history, medical restrictions, rehabilitation, workload management, and return-to-performance progression.
Primary Responsibilities:
Performance Programming
• Develop individualized and team-based strength, conditioning, movement, recovery, and performance programs for all contracted players, including periodization of pre-season, in-season, and post-season plans.
• Conduct appropriate baseline and periodic performance testing and use results to guide programming without exceeding scope of practice.
• Display a command of sports science technology such as Catapult/Kinexon and perform functionality and basic assessments using appropriate devices.
• Monitor workload, wellness, fatigue, and recovery using approved methods and communicate clinically relevant concerns to the medical team and Head Coach.
Medical and Coaching Collaboration
• Coordinate daily with the Athletic Trainer and Head Coach regarding player availability, restrictions, rehabilitation goals, symptoms, workload tolerance, and modifications.
• Participate in return-to-performance planning and implement physician- and athletic trainer-approved progressions from rehabilitation into unrestricted training.
Training Operations and Player Support
• Provide direct supervision for team-organized strength and conditioning sessions and maintain safe technique, appropriate progression, and emergency readiness.
• Be present at every practice and match, according to organizational standards and MLV policies.
• Maintain safe, clean, and organized training facilities and inspect equipment for hazards.
• Provide players with education on training, recovery, sleep, hydration, nutrition, and performance habits within professional scope.
Who You Are:
Required Skills / Knowledge:
• Strong knowledge of evidence-informed strength, conditioning, movement, recovery, workload monitoring, and injury-prevention practices.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with coaches, athletic trainers, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary performance team.
• Ability to coach and supervise high-intensity training safely and communicate clearly with professional athletes.
• Knowledge of sports science technology and related performance-monitoring devices.
• Highly organized, adaptable, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced professional sports environment.
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in exercise science, kinesiology, human performance, strength and conditioning, or a related field.
• Current CSCS, SCCC, or another nationally recognized strength and conditioning credential approved by MLV.
• Current CPR/AED certification.
• Minimum three years of strength and conditioning experience in organized sports, preferably at the collegiate, professional, or national-team level.
• Master's degree in a related discipline preferred.
• Experience in professional volleyball, women's sport, workload monitoring, return-to-performance, and travel-based programming preferred.
• USA Weightlifting, NSCA, NASM, TPI, or other relevant advanced certification preferred.
Physical Requirements:

• Ability to demonstrate, coach, and supervise high-intensity training activities and lift or move training equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, with advance notice.
• Ability to travel within Northern California and to in-state and out-of-state locations for competitions, conferences, training sessions, and other team-related events as needed.
• Ability to work in weight rooms, courts, outdoor areas, hotels, and temporary training locations.
• Ability to bend, kneel, squat, reach overhead, and lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
