The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company's regular full-time staff and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule YEAR-ROUND .

Your Responsibilities

As a Part-Time Student Robotics Engineer for John Deere World Headquarters located in Ames, IA , you will:

  • Effectively communicate and work in a team environment
  • Propose or evaluate design solutions to improve cost, quality, and performance
  • Develop software using JAVA and other programming languages
  • Test design concepts in lab tests or in field environments on prototype equipment
  • Apply technical knowledge to identify and resolve design weaknesses
  • Assess lab and field event data for impact to product reliability

This position is not available to students on immigration visas

What Skills You Need

  • Ideally you will be pursuing a degree in a Mechanical or Computer/Software Engineering discipline; others may apply
  • Must be registered as a full-time student at an accredited College/ University
  • Graduation date of May 2027 or later
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above
  • Available to work during the academic year 10-20 hours/weekly
  • Available to work during the summer semester 35-40 hours/weekly
  • Must be able to be onsite at the work location in Ames, Iowa, during the summer semester on a daily basis
  • Must be able to complete assignments remotely OR be onsite at the John Deere Ames Research Park during the school year
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Experience with Computer Vision and Machine Learning
  • Experience with a programming language, such as MATLAB, C++, Python, Visual Basic, Arduino, Raspberry Pi

  • Experience with Computer Vision and Machine Learning
  • Experience on a John Deere sponsored FIRST Robotics Team
  • Knowledge or work experience in production agriculture (specifically tillage, planters, and sprayers)
  • Experience in product engineering (product design, product testing, software testing)
  • Data analytics experience (Python, R, SQL)
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, Tableau or PowerBI
