Job description

The Associate General Counsel – Litigation, Compliance & Risk Management leads legal matters involving litigation, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, risk management, employment-related legal issues, and dispute resolution. This role provides strategic legal counsel to company leadership, oversees outside counsel, and helps protect the organization from legal and operational risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage company litigation, receivership disputes, subpoenas, government complaints, settlement negotiations, and related legal proceedings.
  • Serve as the primary legal contact for litigation and dispute-related matters as needed, including handling coordination with internal stakeholders and outside counsel.
  • Direct litigation administration, including matter intake, budgeting, reporting, tracking, document management, and deadline oversight.
  • Advise the company on legal compliance, corporate governance, permitting, licensing, entity management, and regulatory obligations.
  • Maintain corporate records and organizational compliance documentation for all applicable entities.
  • Partner with Human Resources on labor and employment matters, workplace investigations, employee relations concerns, and regulatory compliance issues.
  • Lead Legal Department participation in risk management initiatives, including insurance claims, insurance strategy, incident response, crisis management, safety, and security matters.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain legal policies, procedures, templates, playbooks, and contract management resources.
  • Coordinate with courts, government agencies, insurers, clients, lenders, vendors, tenants, and other third parties as necessary.
  • Provide practical, business-focused legal guidance to support operational and strategic objectives.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in the State of Michigan and membership in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience practicing law, including substantial experience in litigation, regulatory compliance, risk management, and corporate legal matters.
  • Proven ability to manage complex litigation, disputes, government inquiries, settlements, and outside counsel relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of corporate governance, business operations, regulatory compliance, licensing, permitting, and organizational risk management.
  • Experience advising executive leadership and Human Resources on employment law, employee relations, workplace compliance, and other high-risk legal issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
