What does a Director of Quantum Computing do?

A Director of Quantum Computing leads the strategic planning and implementation of quantum computing initiatives within an organization. They oversee research and development, manage teams working on quantum algorithms and hardware, and collaborate with external partners and stakeholders. Their responsibilities include setting the vision for quantum technology adoption, ensuring projects align with business goals, and keeping abreast of advancements in the rapidly evolving field. They also help identify opportunities where quantum computing can provide a competitive advantage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Quantum Computing, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Quantum Computing, you need deep expertise in quantum algorithms, quantum physics, and advanced computer science, typically backed by a Ph.D. or equivalent experience. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (like Qiskit or Cirq), quantum hardware platforms, and relevant industry certifications is highly valuable. Strong leadership, strategic vision, and the ability to communicate complex ideas to diverse stakeholders are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure effective management of quantum projects, drive innovation, and bridge the gap between technical teams and business goals.

How does a Director of Quantum Computing typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive quantum initiatives within an organization?

A Director of Quantum Computing works closely with cross-functional teams, including research scientists, software engineers, IT specialists, and executive leadership, to shape and implement quantum strategies. They often facilitate communication between technical experts and non-technical stakeholders to align quantum projects with broader business goals. Regular collaboration involves leading project reviews, supporting team development, and ensuring that research milestones and technology integration efforts move forward smoothly. This role is pivotal in translating quantum advancements into practical solutions that benefit the organization.

Quantum Computing Recruitment Consultant at Barrington James

Your Mission

Our client, a pioneering company at the forefront of quantum computing, is looking for passionate and talented Application Scientists to support the development of industrial-scale quantum computers in close collaboration with leading research institutions and industry partners.

They specialize in delivering advanced quantum control stacks that generate the precise analog signals necessary for controlling and reading out superconducting and spin qubits.

As part of their growing team, you will play a key role in bridging the gap between experimental quantum research and scalable real-world applications. If you're a hands-on scientist with a background in experimental quantum computing, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a fast-evolving field.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Demonstrate the capabilities of our clientโ€™s quantum control solutions in internal field labs (including cryogenic setups with superconducting and spin qubits) and at customer sites.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with customers engaged in quantum research and development, including projects focused on scaling, error correction, and early-stage experimentation.
  • Co-author white papers and scientific publications in collaboration with the internal team and external partners.
  • Represent our client at global conferences and travel internationally for customer visits and field support.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware and software engineering teams to enhance the user experience of the companyโ€™s tools and products.
  • Support the Quantum Success team with training, onboarding, and long-term customer success.
  • Contribute to sales activities and account strategy with the sales engineering team.
  • Assist the marketing team in developing technical marketing materials such as website content and promotional videos.

Who You Are

Weโ€™re looking for a dynamic scientist who brings both technical expertise and a collaborative spirit. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Green Card Holder or US Citizen (No Sponsorship provided)
  • A PhD in physics or a related field, with a focus on experimental quantum computing using superconducting or spin qubits.
  • Hands-on experience working with quantum experiments and lab setups involving RF, microwave, and DC equipment, as well as cryostats and qubit processors.
  • Strong programming skills, particularly in Python.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • A curious and proactive mindset, with a willingness to stay updated on the latest scientific literature and quantum technologies.
  • An affinity for sales, marketing, and customer-facing work (experience in these areas is a plus).
  • Charismatic, energetic, and comfortable representing the company at external events.
  • Fluency in professional English.

Following your application Chris Green, a specialist recruiter will discuss the opportunity with you in detail. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions relating to the industry and the potential for your career growth. The conversation can also progress further to discussing other opportunities, which are also available right now or will be imminently becoming available.
