Director, Portfolio Management Chicago, IL (Hybrid, 3 days in office)

A fast-growing, fee-only fiduciary advisory firm is adding a new fundamental equity strategy to its platform and is hiring a Director of Portfolio Management to lead it. Roughly $450M in assets is coming over to seed the strategy, with a clear runway to scale across the firm's $3B+ legacy client base.

This is a real stock-picker's seat. The work is long-term and value-oriented: quality businesses at reasonable prices, disciplined risk management, customized client outcomes. If you've spent your career building individual stock portfolios and want to do it at scale inside a growing wealth platform, this is the seat.

What you'll own

Portfolio Management & Construction

  • Build and manage customized equity portfolios aligned to client objectives
  • Develop strategic asset allocation frameworks tailored to HNW client needs
  • Maintain a long-term investment philosophy emphasizing quality businesses and valuation discipline
  • Evaluate buy, sell, and hold decisions based on fundamental analysis
  • Incorporate risk management strategies, including hedging and options where appropriate
  • Lead portfolio positioning through market cycles, including down markets and recoveries

Investment Research & Idea Generation

  • Conduct in-depth fundamental research on individual securities
  • Monitor earnings calls, company filings, and market-moving news
  • Evaluate new information and adjust investment theses as needed
  • Develop and present investment recommendations and model portfolios
  • Maintain a high-conviction US Large Cap Equity buy list

Performance & Risk Oversight

  • Track and evaluate portfolio performance relative to benchmarks
  • Manage downside risk in volatile markets
  • Lead portfolio rebalancing strategies in response to market conditions
  • Ensure alignment with client risk tolerances and investment objectives

Client Engagement

  • Serve as a client-facing investment expert
  • Communicate portfolio positioning, market insights, and investment decisions clearly
  • Support retention and growth of HNW client relationships
  • Maintain responsiveness consistent with a high-touch service model

Strategic Contribution

  • Introduce differentiated investment capabilities, including hedging and active management approaches
  • Support legacy client portfolio strategies requiring customization
  • Partner with senior leadership to evolve investment processes and scalability

What you bring

  • CFA designation (required, no exceptions)
  • 10+ years in portfolio management and fundamental equity investing
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing individual stock portfolios
  • Proven track record of performance across multiple market cycles
  • Strong analytical, modeling, and communication skills
  • Experience across multiple firms or investment environments preferred

Role details

  • Location: Chicago (3 days in office required)
  • Classification: Full-time, exempt, 40+ hours per week
