Job Summary:

The Director of Total Rewards opportunity at Ocean State Job Lot (“OSJL” or “Company”) is a crucial leadership position responsible for leading three teams: the Company’s Benefits team, which ensures that benefits offerings are implemented and serviced effectively and efficiently as part of the Company’s total compensation program; the Claims Team, which oversees all aspects of the Company’s claims programs- primarily workers’ compensation and general liability -to mitigate risk and control cost; and the Compensation Team, providing leadership oversight for the team that executes benchmarking, structure and strategy design, pay-for-performance cycle increases, minimum wage auditing, and pay decisions in partnership with Talent Acquisition and Human Resources Business Partners. This role is self-directing, exercises independent judgment, and works closely with Company leadership to anticipate and resolve issues that may impact OSJL benefits and claims program offerings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, recommend, and implement a competitive, cost-effective, and compliant benefits package (e.g., medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), and wellness programs) tailored to the Company’s retail associate, supply chain, and corporate associates.
  • Provide high-level leadership and oversight to the established Compensation Team as they manage job descriptions, role benchmarking, pay structures, and strategy.
  • Oversee compensation governance and policies in partnership with the Compensation Manager including Pay-for-Performance cycle increases, minimum wage auditing, and pay transparency compliance.
  • Leads the risk management function with full ownership of worker’s compensation, general and property liability, claims administration, insurance program design and renewals, and enterprise safety including oversight of third-party administrators, brokers, and carrier relationships to control the cost of risk across the enterprise.
  • Oversee the administration of all leave-of-absence programs to ensure full compliance with applicable state and federal laws (i.e., FMLA, ADA) and Company policies, resulting in a clear, supportive process for associates.
  • Lead and optimize vendor relationships to maintain contract requirements, review and analyze data, and ensure that vendor contracts are meeting the needs of OSJL.
  • Compile and present benefits-related data that demonstrate the success of benefits programs to Company leadership.
  • Use analytics to make informed decisions around all current and new benefit plans. Ensure that appropriate actions are taken for continuous benefits program and process improvements as well as contract compliance.
  • Develop cost control procedures to optimize benefits coverage costs for the Company and its associates.
  • Collaborate with insurance carriers and brokers in the research and development of potential new benefit offerings that reflect the needs of the associate population, and present the same to Company leadership.
  • Aggressively promote benefits program offerings to associates and communicate changes in order to continuously improve the program utilization.
  • Advise and counsel all OSJL leaders and associates on existing benefits programs.
  • Develop a network to resolve associate benefits questions and issues, including focused response protocols for certain issues.
  • Ensure benefit program compliance with the requirements of all applicable state and federal laws including, but not limited to, COBRA, ACA, ADA, ERISA, leaves of absence, and worker’s compensation program compliance and administration for the Company.
  • Lead and perform all duties of 401k Plan Sponsor and comply with all requirements for plan design, loan administration, reporting and auditing activities.
  • Manage associate performance, write performance reviews and provide coaching and feedback for Benefits and claims team members. As needed, delegate work and follow up with team members to confirm timely completion of tasks.
  • Assist with hiring new team members, training new team members and acting as a mentor to coach and develop new teammates.
  • Direct the end-to-end management of all Workers' Compensation and General Liability (e.g., customer slip-and-falls) claims, from initial report to resolution.
  • Analyze claims data to identify trends (e.g., specific stores with high incidents, common injury types) and partner with a safety/loss prevention team to implement corrective actions.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the Company’s legal counsel, TPAs (Third-Party Administrators), and insurance carriers to manage litigated claims and represent the Company in legal proceedings as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, business administration, or a related field is required.
  • 10 or more years of professional experience in benefits administration and Human Resources operations is required; retail industry experience is preferred.
  • 5 or more years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management, vendor management, and strategic process improvement is required.
  • Subject matter expertise regarding federal and New England/Northeast state laws and related compliance for leave of absence and worker’s compensations programs is required.
  • Experience with self-insured benefit plans is required.
  • Proficient in current employment benefits and related laws.
  • Certification in employee benefits is preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and Google platform (i.e., Sites, Slides, Drive, Docs, Sheets).
  • Experience with Oracle, Origami, and human capital management (HCM) software is preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety and health hazard
    potential.
  • Works in an office environment remaining stationary at a desk, table, or computer workstation for extended periods of time. Frequently uses near vision for reading and computer tasks.
  • Hybrid work option: Some work may be completed outside of the Company locations, with at least four (4) days a week in the Corporate Office. The role is responsible for setting up a professional and ergonomically safe work environment and to be available during working hours. Hybrid work options are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time based upon Company policy, associate performance and business needs.
