This role involves collaborating with other departments, making strategic technology decisions, and ensuring that systems align with business goals and industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of systems architecture, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director Of Systems Architecture, you need deep expertise in systems design, enterprise architecture, and IT infrastructure, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with architectural frameworks (like TOGAF or Zachman), cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, TOGAF) is highly valued. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills are essential for guiding teams and aligning technology with business goals. These skills ensure robust, scalable systems that support organizational growth and innovation.

How does a director of systems architecture typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

A Director of Systems Architecture regularly works with engineering, product management, and operations teams to ensure that system designs align with business goals and technical requirements. They facilitate architecture reviews, guide teams on best practices, and mediate between stakeholders to balance technical feasibility with project timelines. Effective communication and leadership are crucial, as the director often translates complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and drives consensus on architectural decisions.

What is the difference between Director Of Systems Architecture vs Systems Engineer?

  • Own system architecture decisions, trade studies, and requirements decomposition across all domains.
  • Drive the selection and implementation of requirements management and MBSE tools.
  • Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing systems engineering team.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (Software, Hardware, Ops) and Product Management to ensure alignment and seamless system integration.

Qualifications
Required
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, with at least 5 years in leadership roles
  • Deep background in aviation, aerospace, air traffic management, or safety-critical autonomous systems
  • Proven experience with aviation safety standards (DO-178C, DO-254, ARP4754A, ARP4761) and certification processes
