Job description
The Associate Director of Student Leadership and Service provides leadership, coordination, and advising for student leadership development, service initiatives, civic engagement, student governance support, and community-based leadership programs. This position serves as a bridge between the Center for Community Engagement and the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement, ensuring that students experience a coordinated and meaningful leadership pathway through service, involvement, governance, and civic engagement.
Primary ResponsibilitiesJourney Leadership Program and Service-Centered Leadership Development Coordinate the day-to-day administration, planning, implementation, and assessment of the Journey Leadership Program under the strategic direction of the Director of the Center for Community Engagement. Develop and implement leadership development experiences rooted in involvement, service, global thinking, civic engagement, and experiential learning. This includes supporting curriculum development, student recruitment, participant communication, leadership workshops, reflection activities, program logistics, and program assessment. Ensure that Journey participants are connected to meaningful opportunities for service, civic engagement, community partnership, and leadership growth. In conjunction with other CCE staff, will provide support for the Alternative Breaks (AB)/International programs. This includes breaks that take place during winter break and spring break. This includes assisting with logistical coordination of the alternative breaks including site selection, partner coordination, student leader training, risk management, travel logistics, reflection activities, and budget management. This also includes developing and leading fundraising efforts in collaboration with University Advancement and other departments to support student participation in service-based travel programs such as AB.
Student Government Association and Campus Activities Program Board Advising Serve as the primary staff advisor to the Campus Activities Program Board, providing leadership development, team building, mentorship, and programming support to executive and general board members. Attend board meetings and select evening and weekend events and accompany students to NACA conferences as part of their professional and leadership development. Support the Director of Student Leadership and Involvement in advising the Student Government Association, providing direct guidance to officers, senators, committees, and other student leaders. Assist with leadership development, officer transitions, elections, student advocacy, budget education, policy interpretation, organizational effectiveness, and SGA-sponsored service and civic engagement initiatives. Help student leaders strengthen responsible governance, ethical and inclusive decision-making, communication, and collaboration with University departments. Provide support for student organization recognition, new organization formation, constitution review, funding processes, and compliance with University policies.
Supervision, Training, and Campus Partners The Associate Director will assist in the supervision of service-learning student leaders, AB leaders, Journey student leaders and student staff; provide training, support, and performance evaluation. This may include co-supervising community service scholars and graduate fellows. Develop and deliver trainings for student leaders, student organization officers, SGA leaders, service-based organizations, and student program planners. Training areas may include leadership development, ethical service, event planning, risk management, inclusive leadership, community engagement, fiscal responsibility, conflict resolution, and transition planning. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support co-curricular leadership and service initiatives. Serve as a connector between CCE, SLI, student organizations, SGA, and other departments within Student Affairs and across the University.
Student Organization Service, Civic Engagement, and Community Impact Initiatives Serve as a primary resource for student organizations interested in service, volunteerism, philanthropy, advocacy, and community impact. Advise service-based student organizations and support student leaders in developing ethical, sustainable, and well-planned service opportunities. Work closely with the Center for Community Engagement, Student Leadership and Involvement, SGA, and other campus partners to plan and execute annual service programs, including campus-wide service days and student-led service initiatives. Assist students with identifying community partners, understanding risk management expectations, planning logistics, and reflecting on the impact of their service.
Assessment, Professional Development, and Other duties as assigned Develop and implement assessment tools to measure student learning, program effectiveness, participation, satisfaction, leadership growth, and community impact. Use data to improve the Journey Leadership Program, service initiatives, student leadership trainings, and student governance support. Participate in professional development opportunities, divisional programs, University committees, and Student Affairs initiatives. Assist with major campus events, including Admissions events, Family Weekend, Convocation, Commencement, Recognition Day, Leadership Awards, Orientation, and other programs as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. Work evenings and weekends as necessary.
Requirements/Qualifications- Master’s degree in student personnel, counseling, higher education administration or related field is required.
- Three to five years’ experience working in higher education or a related field.
- Proven leadership and management skills working with diverse cultures, backgrounds and identities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience advising student organizations, student government, student leaders, service programs, civic engagement initiatives, or leadership development programs is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of student development theory, leadership development pedagogy, experiential learning, civic engagement, and/or service-learning.
- Experience supervising professional staff.
- Excellent oral and written skills, as well as listening and advocacy skills.
- Ability to work with and refer individuals in a crisis.
- Understanding of philosophy, role, and purpose of a service-learning program.
- Demonstrated ability to articulate a student development philosophy within higher education.
- Demonstrated leadership, organization, management, and platform skills; including an ability to oversee a wide variety of activities.
- Demonstrated experience in program development, implementation, and assessment.
- Experience and proficiency in the use of technology to include PC use, desktop publishing, Microsoft Office suite, and internet use.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on-line, scheduled or on-call
The salary range for this role is $60,000–$75,000. Salary Transparency Suffolk University provides salary ranges as a good faith estimate of what it reasonably expects to pay for a role at the time the position is posted. The actual salary offered to the selected candidate will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to, the position’s scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience, education, training, and applicable legal requirements.
