Job description

Position Summary: The Assistant Softball Coach supports the Head Softball Coach in all aspects of the softball program, including player development, practice and game preparation, team operations, recruiting support, and fostering a positive, disciplined, and competitive team culture. This role contributes to the overall growth of student-athletes both on and off the field while ensuring alignment with organizational standards, player well-being, and competitive excellence. 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with planning, organizing, and conducting high-quality softball practices, training sessions, and player development programs 
  • Support the development of student-athletes’ softball-specific skills including hitting, pitching, catching, fielding, baserunning, strength, conditioning, and game strategy 
  • Provide position-specific instruction and individualized coaching to support athlete growth and performance progression 
  • Assist with game preparation, opponent scouting, in-game coaching, and post-game evaluations 
  • Utilize softball technology, video analysis, and performance tools to support athlete development and competitive preparation 
  • Collaborate with Strength & Conditioning, Sports Medicine, Mental Performance, and academic staff to support holistic student-athlete development 
  • Maintain open, two-way communication with student-athletes and parents/guardians regarding athletic progress, goals, development plans, academics, and overall campus life 
  • Serve as a mentor and educator by promoting leadership, accountability, teamwork, discipline, resilience, and positive life habits among student-athletes 
  • Continuously evaluate the athletic, academic, and emotional development of each student-athlete and collaborate with leadership to ensure appropriate support resources are provided 
  • Assist student-athletes throughout the college recruiting and placement process as needed 
  • Guide student-athletes through tournament and competition preparation including scheduling, travel logistics, pre-game readiness, post-game review, and performance benchmarks 
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of softball training equipment, analytics, instructional methodologies, and technology utilized within the program 
  • Assist with player recruitment, retention, and talent evaluation efforts 
  • Collaborate with leadership to regularly review and improve program structure, training content, player development strategies, and operational effectiveness 
  • Support softball camps, clinics, showcases, recruiting events, and special departmental initiatives 
  • Travel with teams for games, tournaments, showcases, and recruiting events as needed 
  • Assist with equipment management, field setup and maintenance, uniform distribution, and inventory control 
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies, procedures, safety standards, NCAA recruiting guidelines, and codes of conduct 
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong knowledge of softball fundamentals, coaching techniques, and player development strategies 
  • Experience playing, coaching, or managing softball at the collegiate, club, amateur, or professional level 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, Business Administration, or a related sports/business field preferred, or equivalent experience 
  • Strong commitment to the development and well-being of student-athletes 
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented and high-performance environment 
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced athletic setting 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing elite or nationally ranked softball players or teams 
  • Knowledge of softball analytics, video breakdown, and performance technology platforms 
  • Experience with recruiting and college placement processes 
  • Bilingual preferred 
  • CPR Certification preferred 
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to travel for tournaments, games, showcases, and recruiting events 
  • Experience working camps, clinics, and player development programs 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull equipment or boxes in excess of 40lbs.  
  • Should be able to handle outdoor temperatures for a reasonable period of time. 
  • Must be able to move around campus which includes gym, turf, fields, etc. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include nights, weekends and holidays is required
