Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Under general direction, responsible for the ownership of the Property Technical Discipline in Assigned Territory, which includes: Conducting quality Risk Assessments, assisting customers with Loss Control, providing consultation to Staff and Business Partners, and helping identify needs for Technical Training of Regional Specialist Consultants (RSCs), and Staff in assigned territory. This job serves as a technical resource to Risk Control Consultants and Underwriters and as a mentor to others. As a Senior Risk Control Specialist, has the ability to handle the most complex assignments based on technical complexity, customer service expectations, high challenge, high visibility, etc. Exhibits exceptional technical skills as well as above average interpersonal skills, training ability, etc. Ability to handle some duties of the Technical Director (e.g. job assignment responsibilities in the Director's absence, meeting attendance.) This position influences but does not manage others.

What Will You Do?

  • Maintain a consistent field presence, spending approximately 20% - 50% of the time with customers, either onsite or virtually. Traveling to customers may entail long-distance, overnight travel, and/or multi-night trips depending on the needs of the business and alignment with territory and/or geography.
  • Conduct risk evaluations of Travelers customers of the highest complexity, identifying exposures, loss controls, and opportunities for improved risk management. Share findings with Underwriting to support effective risk pricing.
  • Leverage expert consulting skills to educate customers on how they can better manage risk and influence them to adopt recommended changes.
  • Mentor Risk Control consultants and less experienced Specialists to support their development within the discipline. This will entail reviewing the survey reports of consultants and Specialists for accuracy and thoroughness (peer reviews), helping newer Specialists to prepare for customer surveys, and providing regular guidance and feedback on technical matters.
  • Hone expertise within the discipline by studying emerging issues, tracking loss trends in claim data, and occasionally attending industry conferences. As a subject matter expert, educate and deliver targeted trainings to Risk Control consultants, Specialists, customers, and business partners on discipline-specific topics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a science discipline.
  • Eight or more years of experience with demonstrated expertise within the property risk control/engineering discipline.
  • Certification in one or more recognized risk control disciplines such as PE, CFPS, etc.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to simplify complex technical information and deliver recommendations to audiences of varying levels of expertise.
  • Coaching and talent development skills including ability to mentor, motivate others, and provide feedback.
  • Expert understanding of risk control's role in commercial lines insurance products, services, and risk selection practices.
  • Expert interpersonal and influencing skills to build credibility with internal and external customers and encourage others to act on recommendations.
  • Expert organizational and time management skills to manage priorities, plan work, and meet business partner expectations.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline.
  • Six years of risk assessment/consulting experience within the property discipline or fire protection industry.
  • Valid driver's license.
