The Opportunity
Tetra Tech is looking for a full-time Director of Business Development based in Chicago, IL. 

Position Summary
Tetra Tech has an exciting opportunity in our Chicago, IL office. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced and results-driven Director of Business Development to lead strategic growth initiatives, strengthen client relationships, and expand our market presence across key industry sectors.

The Director of Business Development is responsible for developing and executing growth strategies that drive revenue, increase market share, and support the firm's long-term strategic objectives. This role will identify new business opportunities, cultivate relationships with existing and prospective clients, lead pursuit strategies, and collaborate closely with technical and operational leaders to secure new projects and contracts.

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, an exceptional relationship builder, and a proven seller with deep knowledge of the environmental consulting industry. Regional travel is required.
 

Essential Job Functions

Strategic Growth & Market Development:

  • Develop and implement business development strategies aligned with company growth objectives.
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities within targeted markets, industries, and geographies.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Develop and maintain executive-level relationships with existing and prospective clients.

  • Enhance company visibility through networking, thought leadership, and strategic partnerships.
  • Collaborate with marketing teams on campaigns, branding initiatives, and market positioning efforts.


Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Partner with operations, technical leaders, and project managers to align business development priorities with company capabilities.
  • Facilitate strategic planning discussions and growth initiatives.
  • Mentor and support business development staff as the organization grows.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in environmental science, geology, engineering or related physical science degree.

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience.

  • 10+ years of business development, sales, client management, or consulting experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in the environmental consulting, engineering consulting, or related professional services industry. 
  • Demonstrated success generating revenue growth and winning new business opportunities. 
  • Strong network of industry contacts within environmental, industrial, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, real estate, government, or related sectors. 
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. 
  • Proven ability to influence executive-level decision makers.
  • Driving on an occasional basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
     


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with federal, state, and local government contracting.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations, permitting, remediation, compliance, sustainability, ESG, or natural resource services.
  • Experience managing CRM platforms and sales pipelines.

Additional Information (REQUIRED)

  • Standard schedule is Monday through Friday during normal business hours; however, hours may vary based on project needs. Flexibility is required to accommodate travel, and business development and marketing activities.
  • Overtime may be required to meet proposal deadlines. Compensation is provided in accordance with company policy and applicable regulations.
  • This position will consist of a hybrid schedule, with office and remote work flexibility.

  • Travel may be required, including local and regional travel as well as potential nationwide deployment. Travel may account for up to approximately 25% of the role depending on pursuit needs and business development and marketing activities. 
  • This position supports state, municipal and commercial clients and requires adherence to all company, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Must be able to drive on an occasional basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
