Director of Medical Physics
Department: Radiation Oncology
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer
Location: The START Center for Cancer Care, San Antonio, Texas
Travel: Travel between radiation oncology locations
FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time
Position Summary
The Director of Medical Physics provides strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and operational management for the Radiation Oncology Physics program across The START Center for Cancer Care's three radiation therapy locations. This role ensures the safe, effective, and compliant delivery of radiation therapy services through the oversight of treatment planning, quality assurance, equipment commissioning, regulatory compliance, and professional staff development.
The Director serves as the lead physics expert for the organization and works closely with Radiation Oncologists, Dosimetrists, Radiation Therapists, Administrators, and vendor partners to support exceptional patient care while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical and Technical Leadership
- Direct and oversee all medical physics activities across three radiation oncology treatment sites.
- Ensure the quality, safety, and accuracy of radiation therapy treatments delivered to patients.
- Provide oversight for treatment planning processes and clinical physics operations.
- Establish and maintain comprehensive quality assurance (QA) and quality control programs for all radiation therapy equipment and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with AAPM, NRC, Texas Department of State Health Services, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory and professional standards.
- Oversee machine commissioning, acceptance testing, annual testing, and ongoing performance evaluations of treatment delivery systems.
- Review and approve policies related to treatment planning, imaging, radiation safety, and quality management.
- Oversee 4 linear accelerators (all Varian equipment) and Aria record and verify system.
- Provide Eclipse Treatment Planning
Leadership and Staff Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and professional development activities for physics staff.
- Coordinate clinical coverage and staffing plans to support all treatment locations.
- Treat 80-100 patients a day.
Operational Management
- Develop departmental goals, strategic initiatives, and operational standards.
- Monitor and improve workflow efficiency across physics and dosimetry services.
- Collaborate with leadership on budgeting, capital equipment planning, and technology implementation.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, software, and clinical processes to support organizational growth and innovation.
- Assist with planning, development, and expansion of future radiation oncology facilities and services.
Regulatory and Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation requirements.
- Lead radiation safety initiatives and collaborate with Radiation Safety Officers and clinical leadership.
- Support internal and external audits, surveys, and accreditation activities.
- Maintain documentation of quality assurance activities and regulatory records.
Education and Research
- Provide education and technical guidance to clinicians and staff.
- Support participation in clinical research initiatives and implementation of emerging technologies when applicable.
- Stay current on developments in radiation oncology physics and recommend best practices for implementation.
Other Responsibilities
- Serve as a key resource for physicians, administrators, and clinical staff regarding radiation oncology physics matters.
- Participate in organizational committees and leadership meetings as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Education
- PhD or MS in Medical Physics, Radiological Physics, Radiation Physics, or related field from an accredited program.
Required Certifications and Licensure
- Board Certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics through the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent.
- Licensed Medical Physicist in the State of Texas, or ability to obtain licensure within an established timeframe.
Required Experience
- Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in Radiation Oncology Physics.
- Minimum three (3) years of leadership, supervisory, or management experience.
- Experience supporting multiple treatment locations preferred.
- Extensive experience with linear accelerators, treatment planning systems, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), IMRT, VMAT, SRS, and SBRT.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong leadership and team development skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of radiation oncology physics principles and practices.
- Thorough understanding of current regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to develop policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across several clinical locations.
- Proficiency with radiation oncology software, oncology information systems, and treatment planning platforms.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move throughout clinical treatment areas.
- Ability to inspect equipment and work at computer stations for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
