Job description

MX is seeking a Director of Marketing to lead the marketing function of one of the largest independent B2B marketing agencies in the United States. This is a rare and genuinely challenging role: you'll be building strategy and driving results for a company staffed with some of the most talented B2B marketing professionals in the industry. A strong POV, high energy, and tangible results will be essential to establishing credibility and building momentum for the agency's marketing efforts. The Director of Marketing must possess the ability to build alignment and drive execution across leaders and subject matter experts.

This role is the strategic owner of MX's entire marketing program, responsible for building brand awareness, driving pipeline, and leading the agency through a brand evolution already underway in 2026. You'll orchestrate a lean core marketing team alongside the agency's full resources: media, data & analytics, content, creative, and an external PR firm.

If you're a marketer who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment, loves to collaborate, and is ready to go all-in, we want to hear from you.

What You'll Do Marketing Strategy & Pipeline Accountability
  • Develop, own, and continuously iterate MX's marketing strategy, balancing brand building with near-term pipeline generation across MX's five entry points: Activation, Content, Brand, Demand, and Digital.
  • Be accountable for marketing's contribution to the new business pipeline, working in close partnership with the new business team.
  • Set the annual marketing budget and manage spend across channels, programs, and partners.
Brand Positioning & Relaunch Leadership
  • Play a central role in the 2026 relaunch of the MX brand, one of the most significant and visible initiatives underway at the agency.
  • Ensure the new brand platform is activated consistently and powerfully across all channels, from the website to social to paid media to events, to position MX as THE growth partner for B2B marketers with growth ambitions .
Team & Resource Leadership
  • Lead the core marketing team (Digital Marketing Manager, PR & Content Marketing Manager) and orchestrate the broader agency resources supporting marketing.
  • Manage external marketing resources contributing to our integrated marketing efforts and other growth initiatives.
  • Be a visible, energetic, and collaborative presence in the Burr Ridge office that makes MX employees excited to participate in marketing activities.
Awareness & Market Presence
  • Build MX's profile in the B2B marketing community through earned media, events, awards, thought leadership, and social channels.
  • Elevate how MX shows up in AI search (AEO/GEO), traditional organic search, and social, alongside the Digital Marketing Manager.
  • Oversee the 1:1 ABM program targeting pre-RFP enterprise opportunities.
Executive Partnership
  • Report marketing performance and pipeline impact directly to the leadership team.
  • Serve as the marketing voice in ELT discussions about growth strategy and market position.
  • Translate performance data into clear strategy adjustments - be as comfortable presenting a pivot as a win.
What We're Looking For
  • 10+ years of marketing leadership with a demonstrated track record of driving pipeline and brand metrics
  • Agency background strongly preferred; you understand the pace, the culture, and the reality that client work takes priority.
  • A strategic mind first; you set direction, hold teams accountable, and adjust based on results.
  • Proven ability to lead a room, build credibility, and earn buy-in from smart, opinionated people, in particular, other marketing professionals
  • Entrepreneurial energy: comfortable in fast-moving environments with limited process structure
  • In-office presence at our Burr Ridge, IL headquarters, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday minimum, and any day clients or collaboration require
What This Role Is Not

We want to be direct. This is not a role for someone who is most energized by personally running campaigns, optimizing ad platforms, or managing email queues. Those capabilities live on the team around you. What we need is someone who sets the direction for those activities, assembles the right resources, holds the team accountable, and owns the outcomes.

We also want to be honest about the environment: MX is an agency, and client work comes first. Our internal marketing program succeeds when its leader understands and works within that reality. The right person for this role will see that dynamic as a feature, not a constraint: it means you have an entire agency's worth of talent available to you when they're not serving clients.

Finally, this role is not for someone looking to slow down, settle into a defined set of responsibilities, or find a comfortable equilibrium. MX is in growth mode, and this person needs to be all-in.

About MX

A leading independent B2B marketing agency, MX has been helping complex B2B companies build their brands, drive demand, and grow revenue for over 35 years. We are the second largest independent B2B agency in the United States, yet one of the industry's best-kept secrets and we're working to change that. We've been named one of the Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in Chicago for nine years running and in the Nation for three consecutive years. Our work spans Strategy & Insights, Creative & Production, Content Marketing, Digital Marketing & Media, Lead Gen & Nurture, Channel Marketing, Digital Experience, and Martech & Data.

This is an exciting moment to join MX. We are growing, investing in our brand and our team, and actively pursuing a larger stage. The Director of Marketing will be one of the most visible and consequential hires we make this year.

Compensation

Compensation Range: $150,000- $170,000 annually + bonus potential. MX believes it will pay this pay range for this position at the time of this posting. Compensation will be determined based on the applicant's experience, skills, and qualifications, in addition to the requirements of the position. MX reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time. This role qualifies for MX's benefits offering, including medical, dental, vision, 401 (k), and paid time off.

MX is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. That means we not only provide equal opportunity and consideration to all employees and applicants for employment - we welcome it. We won't unlawfully discriminate on the basis of gender identity or expression, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, physical or mental disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, and any other category protected by law, because we believe diversity drives us to deliver more valuable and meaningful experiences to clients and employees.

During the recruitment process, MX will only communicate using our corporate domain name (themxgroup.com) and will never ask for personal information other than contact information and job history until an offer has been made. Additionally, MX will never request that you purchase anything during any part of the recruitment or hiring process. You can read more about detecting and reporting employment scams at the Internet Crime Complaint Center and Federal Trade Commission websites.
