Job description

Overview:
The Los Angeles Angels are seeking a Data Engineer, Baseball Systems to join the Baseball Operations Research & Development team. In this role, you will work with other developers to design, build, and maintain the data infrastructure that powers the Angels decision-making processes across scouting, player development, and in-game strategy. The position reports directly to the Senior Director, Research and Development.
This position is benefit-eligible including: medical, dental and vision insurance, 401K eligibility; employee contributions after 3 months, employer matching and safe harbor after 1 year and 1000 hours of employment and additional perks not listed above. The expected annual salary for this position can range from $95,000-$110,000. Final offers for this role will be made within the parameters of the salary range provided.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines to collect, transform, and store large volumes of baseball-related data from multiple sources
  • Schedule automated job processes to ingest, aggregate, and manipulate data in real or near-real time
  • Work closely with data scientists, developers, IT, and other stakeholders to ensure data quality, availability, and accessibility
  • Implement data validation and monitoring tools to ensure system reliability and data integrity
  • Contribute to system design decisions and engineering best practices within Baseball Operations

Required Qualifications:
  • Solid working knowledge of Python (2+ years strongly preferred), preferably using pandas
  • Proficient in SQL principles, including table keys, indexes, data modeling, and stored procedures
  • Ability to design scalable, high-performance data solutions
  • Experience using 3rd-party API documentation to build dynamic systems
  • Work in-person at Angel Stadium most days with occasional opportunity for remote work
  • Ability and willingness to work and/or be on-call during nights and weekends as necessary, especially during the baseball season

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc)
  • Knowledge of workflow orchestration tools like Airflow or Dagster
  • Ability to design and implement CI/CD pipelines for testing and deploying applications
  • Experience managing Linux or Windows servers using Bash or Powershell
  • Basic knowledge of storage solutions (NAS, file systems, etc) for storing large volumes of non-relational data
  • Familiarity with cloud-based computing and data warehousing concepts (GCP preferred)
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • A passion for baseball analytics

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to frequently sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to use hands frequently (for keyboard, mouse and general computer use)
  • Ability to occasionally work in inclement weather (when in stadium)
  • Ability to traverse from office to stadium frequently
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
