Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer - Circuit Board, Systems Engineering and Testing
This position requires an expert in the electrical design of custom circuit boards. All facets of design will be required of this individual. If you are a senior/principal engineer and want to focus on pure electrical design of products, this is the job for you.
PacStar is a leading supplier of small, rugged, and modular networking solutions primarily to the DoD. The PacStar 400 series product line has become a 'de-facto' standard for deployed IP communications in the US Army and USMC. A series of wins over the last 3 years has resulted in significant growth in this business. This individual will be the primary electrical designer for the next generation of 400 series modules, and as such, a key member of the team continuing to move new technologies to the edge of the network.
You will bring an in-depth understanding of x86 servers, GPUs and hardware; you are well versed in testing, qualification, and benchmarking of CPU, GPU, and Storage under Windows, Linux, and VMware ESXi. You will work with our cross-functional engineering teams to develop functionality for our customers where size, weight, and power (SWAP) and reliability are mission-critical. Our products are used by the military, emergency responders, and forward-looking commercial enterprises worldwide. This senior engineering position blends hands-on engineering work with internal and external team collaboration. The primary location for work will be our Portland, Oregon office.

Salary Range: $ 108,900.00 - 145,000.00 per year plus bonus

Your Challenge:
  • Translate product level requirements into implementable circuits
    • Work with Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Management in an interactive manner to develop electrical solutions to project requirements
    • Define potential electrical implementation solutions and discuss tradeoffs
  • Design electrical solutions for PacStar products Implementing Designs in Altium producing PCB and PCBA packages driving Concepts, Prototypes, and Production Platforms
    • High Speed signal routing for Ethernet ports (100 Mbps to 10 Gbps)
    • Simple micro-processor design and firmware development (mostly for low level power on)
    • Design for small Form Factor and physically rugged environments
    • Work across Functional Teams Providing PCB outline, mounting, and placement with Mechanical and Thermal Engineering identifying and addressing thermal and fitment issues as they occur.
    • Provide detailed electrical design guidance when utilizing external board layout resources (e.g. isolation, stack up, signal transmission requirements, etc.)
  • Coordinate with purchasing and board build house for fabrication and assembly of engineering test units
  • Develop, design and test power and general network PCBs.
  • Work collaboratively with hardware engineering to build and execute test plans to measure systems performance, validate design performance, and support product qualification of integrated solutions.
  • Transition designs to manufacturing
    • Provide complete design packages to enable production build; Board production quantities are in the high hundreds per year utilizing mostly on-shore suppliers
    • Develop and provide PCB functional test plans for Assembly Manufacturer End of Line Testing
    • Support 3rd party Fab, Assembly, and System Production with problem resolution and test support when required
  • Coordinate and communicate with management regarding schedule, milestones, technical status, etc.
  • Interface with technical staff from 3rd parties to resolve technical issues
  • Develop and manage technology demonstration development, maintaining schedule and reporting on progress to cross-functional teams and management
  • Transition technology to production, including input to test procedures, user documentation, and marketing materials
  • Independently manage schedules, identifying roadblocks or needed resources early to ensure schedule success
  • Other duties as assigned

What you bring:
  • BS in Electrical Engineer required with more than 10 years of direct experience in circuit board design and experience in Systems Engineering, Network Engineering
  • Must be able to capture Schematics in Altium and be able to perform low level PCB troubleshooting and debug
  • Writing and developing test cases
  • Experience with product MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-STD-1275/704 is desired
  • Familiarity with design of network devices (Switches, Routers) and servers is a plus
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to customer support
  • Independent Professional that can perform job assignments with limited supervision
  • Must be able to self-organize workloads and manage all deadlines
  • Able to communicate technical details with nontechnical team members
  • Ability to learn from, and mentor team members
  • Perform Validation and/or qualification testing for new and existing products
  • Experience with the following technology areas is strongly desired:
    • Virtualization, Storage, Network, and Systems Integration
    • Networking devices (routers, switches, firewalls; preferably Cisco)
    • Deployment and implementation of new systems using a repeatable process
    • VMware (or similar) virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)
    • Smart Battery control and design
  • Ability to lift and carry 35 pounds of test equipment at least 40 feet
