Director Modeling Simulation Engineer information

What is a director modeling simulation engineer?

A Director Modeling Simulation Engineer is a senior-level leader responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of complex models and simulations, often within industries such as aerospace, defense, or engineering. This role involves managing teams of engineers and scientists, setting technical strategy, and ensuring that simulation tools meet organizational goals and project requirements. The director collaborates with other departments, ensures quality control, and often represents the modeling and simulation function to stakeholders. They are also involved in resource planning, budgeting, and mentoring junior staff. The position requires extensive technical expertise and leadership experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director modeling simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Director Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need advanced expertise in systems engineering, computational modeling, and simulation development, typically supported by a degree in engineering or applied sciences and extensive industry experience. Familiarity with technical tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, C++, and modeling frameworks, as well as certifications like INCOSE CSEP or PMP, is common. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills help drive cross-functional teams and effectively present complex technical concepts to stakeholders. These abilities ensure successful project execution, innovation, and alignment of simulation efforts with organizational goals.

How does a director modeling simulation engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive project success?

A Director Modeling Simulation Engineer often works closely with teams such as product development, systems engineering, and software engineering to ensure simulation models align with overall project goals. This role involves leading technical discussions, translating complex modeling requirements into actionable tasks, and providing guidance to ensure accuracy and integration of simulations within larger systems. Frequent collaboration may also include presenting findings to stakeholders, mentoring junior engineers, and coordinating with project managers to align timelines and deliverables. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to facilitate effective teamwork and project outcomes.

What is the difference between Director Modeling Simulation Engineer vs Modeling Simulation Engineer?

AspectDirector Modeling Simulation EngineerModeling Simulation Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, or related fields; often with leadership experienceRequires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, and collaborates with senior managementFocuses on developing and running simulations, working within engineering teams
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, defense, automotive, and technology sectors for high-level simulation oversightCommonly employed in similar industries for technical simulation tasks

The main difference is that the Director Modeling Simulation Engineer oversees teams and strategic projects, while the Modeling Simulation Engineer focuses on technical simulation work. The director role involves leadership, project management, and higher-level decision-making, whereas the engineer role emphasizes hands-on simulation development and analysis.

Job description

Vantor is forging the new frontier of spatial intelligence, helping decision makers and operators navigate what's happening now and shape what's coming next. Vantor is a place for problem solvers, changemakers, and go-getters-where people are working together to help our customers see the world differently, and in doing so, be seen differently. Come be part of a mission, not just a job, where you can: Shape your own future, build the next big thing, and change the world.
To be eligible for this position, you must be a U.S. Citizen. This position requires an active U.S. Government security clearance, applicants who do not currently hold the required clearance will not be eligible for consideration. Employment for cleared roles is contingent upon verification of clearance status.
Export Control/ITAR: Certain roles may be subject to U.S. export control laws, requiring U.S. person status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
Please review the job details below.
Vantor is seeking an Aerospace Modeling & Simulation Engineer II to support advanced ISR studies for government and commercial customers. In this role, you will model satellites, aircraft, sensor systems, mission scenarios, and operational concepts to evaluate performance, explore trade-offs, and inform decisions on future space and airborne capabilities.
This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced engineer who can independently solve complex mission problems, improve simulation capabilities, and turn detailed analysis into clear recommendations. You will own major analysis tasks, coordinate with technical stakeholders, and contribute to the development of reusable tools and consistent modeling practices.
What You'll Do
  • Independently develop, modify, and run high-fidelity simulations of space, airborne, and ISR sensor systems for architecture studies, system trades, performance assessments, and mission-level analyses.
  • Design operational vignettes and analysis plans that translate customer priorities into measurable scenarios, assumptions, and evaluation criteria.
  • Own complex analysis tasks from requirements clarification through model configuration, execution, interpretation, and delivery.
  • Develop new tools, scripts, simulator features, and reusable scenario components to improve scenario generation, data analysis, visualization, and workflow efficiency.
  • Analyze results to identify trends, risks, trade-offs, sensitivities, and key performance drivers, and provide defensible recommendations.
  • Apply and improve QA/QC, verification, validation, configuration-management, and documentation practices.
  • Estimate technical effort, identify risks and dependencies, and coordinate assigned work with project leads and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Present findings and recommendations to technical teams, program leaders, and customers.
  • Provide technical guidance and peer review to less-experienced analysts.

Note: US citizenship and an active TS/SCI clearance are mandatory for this position and required for consideration.
Required:
  • US Citizenship Required with an active or current TS/SCI clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science.
  • 3 years of professional experience in space systems modeling and simulation, including knowledge of the theory and applications of astrodynamics, remote sensing, spacecraft design, aerospace systems operations, or complex systems integration.
  • Willing to work on-site.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • 7 years of professional experience in space systems modeling and simulation, including knowledge of the theory and applications of astrodynamics, remote sensing, spacecraft design, aerospace systems operations, or complex systems integration.
  • Experience with the design, development and software implementation of complex mathematical algorithms.
  • Ability to develop standalone engineering tools/scripts via Python and/or Excel.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, resolve technical risks and issues, develop technical reports, and collaborate with government and other stakeholders to implement recommended solutions.
  • Ability to communicate and establish collaborative relationships with both clients and teammates to achieve program goals.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and dynamic work ethic with a strong desire to contribute to the mission.
