Location: Rolling Meadows, IL Salary: $65.00 USD Hourly - $97.00 USD Hourly Description:
Our client is currently seeking a Motor Drive Engineer
The Motor Drive Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, integration, and testing of advanced motor control systems supporting complex aerospace and defense applications. This role focuses on motor selection, drive electronics, digital control development, power electronics, and system-level performance optimization. The engineer will work within a multidisciplinary environment to develop high-performance motion control solutions that meet demanding technical and operational requirements.
This job will have the following responsibilities:
Design, develop, and implement motor control systems for advanced aerospace and defense applications.
Select, evaluate, and integrate three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors, motor drives, and digital control solutions.
Develop and analyze power electronics designs supporting motor drive and motion control applications.
Create and validate motor control algorithms using MATLAB, Simulink, and circuit simulation tools.
Perform modeling, simulation, and performance analysis of motor drive systems and associated control architectures.
Support hardware integration, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and system verification activities.
Conduct trade studies and technical evaluations to optimize performance, reliability, and cost objectives.
Develop and validate embedded control solutions and digital controllers for motor drive applications.
Collaborate with systems, software, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams to ensure successful product development and integration.
Evaluate system-level requirements and understand how motor drive performance impacts overall platform functionality.
Support EMI/EMC compliance efforts and ensure designs meet applicable customer and regulatory requirements.
Participate in multi-axis servo control and stabilization system development where applicable.
Document designs, test plans, procedures, and engineering data throughout the product lifecycle.
Support customer reviews, technical presentations, and design reviews.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant motor control, motor drive, or power electronics engineering experience.
Experience with the selection and control of three-phase Brushless DC (BLDC) motors.
Strong background in power electronics design and development.
Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, and circuit simulation tools such as SPICE or Saber.
Strong understanding of motor control systems, power conversion, and electromechanical system integration.
Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, team-oriented engineering environment.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support multiple engineering efforts simultaneously.
U.S. Citizenship required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a minimum Secret Security Clearance and any additional customer-required clearances prior to start.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience selecting motors, motor drives, and digital controllers based on technical and cost objectives.
Experience supporting high-precision multi-axis servo systems and inertial stabilization applications.
Experience designing power electronics utilizing Gallium Nitride (GaN) FET technology.
Hands-on integration, troubleshooting, validation, and test experience.
Understanding of EMI/EMC design and compliance requirements.
Experience with digital communication interfaces and embedded control systems.
Strong understanding of digital control theory and advanced motion control techniques.
Knowledge of the relationship between motor drive performance and overall system performance requirements.
Experience developing C code for Texas Instruments C2000 microcontrollers using Code Composer Studio or similar embedded development environments.
Experience conducting structured engineering trade studies and technical evaluations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Active TS/SCI Security Clearance preferred.
