Job description

We are looking for a seasoned Senior Engineering Manager to lead a web and mobile engineering team responsible for delivering key customer experiences. This role is ideal for a leader who combines strong people management, deep customer empathy, product partnership, and technical judgment, including curiosity and excitement about the possibilities of AI in software development.

The best person for this role will be highly engaged in the customer problems we are solving. They will bring a practical understanding of customer-facing software and help translate customer and business goals into strong technical execution. They will be an active partner with Product, Design, and Quality leaders to help clarify trade-offs and guide the team toward solutions that are scalable, reliable, measurable, and valuable to customers.

This leader will raise the technical bar for the team by staying close to the codebase through code reviews and occasional direct contribution, by engaging knowledgeably with engineers on architecture and long-term platform health, and by setting ambitious targets for performance, quality, and developer productivity. They will coach engineers across a range of experience levels, create clarity in ambiguous situations, and build a high-performing team culture grounded in ownership, learning, collaboration, and strong execution. They will not simply follow AI trends, but will help the team thoughtfully evaluate and adopt tools and practices that make engineering more effective.

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone looking for an engineering management role that has a transformative effect on customers and the teams building for them.

Responsibilities

Mentor, coach, and develop a high-performing team of 6-8 web and mobile engineers

Provide clear growth paths through goal setting, regular 1:1s, feedback, performance management, rewards, and recognition

Maintain a team culture of ownership, empowerment, collaboration, innovation, transparency, and high standards for technical execution

Lead the development and delivery of customer-facing web and mobile experiences, balancing product outcomes, engineering excellence, delivery predictability, and team health

Partner deeply with Product Management and Design to understand customer problems and intended outcomes, contributing an engineering perspective to trade-off discussions, keeping the team oriented around solutions that truly work for customers, and instituting appropriate observability and instrumentation

Translate product and customer context into strong engineering plans, helping teams decompose work, identify dependencies, manage risk, and deliver iteratively through Agile Scrum/Kanban practices

Own project and delivery management for the team, including roadmap alignment, resource planning, schedule tracking, release planning, risk management, and proactive escalation of gaps or trade-offs

Partner with Quality, Product, and Engineering leaders to ensure web and mobile apps meet functional requirements and non-functional expectations for performance, scalability, reliability, security, accessibility, and maintainability

Provide technical leadership and oversight by engaging knowledgeably with engineers on application architecture, library and framework updates, build systems, CI/CD improvements, release processes, testing strategy, performance optimization, and developer productivity

Ensure the engineering team follows best practices such as designing for reuse, automated testing, code quality, secure development, operational readiness, effective collaboration across platform teams, and thoughtful adoption of AI-enabled tools

Provide clear visibility to leadership on priorities, customer impact, delivery status, risks, metrics, and team health through established operating mechanisms

Develop technical leaders and senior engineers who can raise the bar for architecture, quality, execution, and customer-focused problem solving across the organization

Qualifications

7+ years of experience in the software industry, with 4+ years in engineering leadership, including demonstrated ownership of technical delivery and team development

Strong people-management skills and instincts, with a track record of building, coaching, and retaining high-performing engineering teams

Strong technical depth in modern web application development, including React/Redux or comparable front-end technologies, and meaningful experience with mobile client development (React Native and/or native iOS/Android)

Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with Product Management and Design on customer problems, product discovery, requirements, trade-offs, success metrics, and post-launch learning

Strong product judgment and customer empathy, with the ability to understand customer workflows, translate customer pain points into engineering context, and keep teams oriented around measurable outcomes

Solid engineering project management capabilities, especially roadmap planning, execution, dependency management, release planning, and risk communication

Ability to engage credibly with engineers on architecture, build and release processes, testing strategy, performance, maintainability, and developer experience

Good understanding of cloud technologies such as microservices, Java, Spring Boot, APIs, relational databases, and service integration patterns

Experience developing and operating customer-facing applications, preferably at scale

Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and driving toward clarity by partnering with stakeholders and helping teams break complex problems into actionable plans

Ability to evaluate trade-offs, balance short-term delivery with long-term platform health, and make pragmatic decisions in dynamic situations

Experience leading teams through Agile development processes such as Scrum and/or Kanban

Experience working with UX designers to build easy-to-use visual interfaces in web and/or mobile apps

Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, product partners, designers, executives, and cross-functional stakeholders

Experience coaching and mentoring engineers at various levels, including senior engineers and technical leads

Experience with fintech, personal finance, subscriptions, or other consumer software domains is a plus

BS/MS in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience
