Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) spans 120 Availability Zones within 38 geographic Regions around the world, with announced plans for 10 more Availability Zones and three more Regions - making AWS the most extensive global cloud infrastructure provider and one of the fastest-growing enterprise technology companies ever. Amazon's AWS Data Centers (DC) are a major component of worldwide cloud-computing infrastructure and are industry-leading examples of mission-critical facilities.
Engineers in AWS work to design resilient, cost-effective DC facilities.

We are responsible for achieving world-class uptime for our customers and developing a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet AWS's growing demand. We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make directly to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs.
As an Engineering Manager at AWS, you will have the opportunity to impact changes in our current design and establish design procedures and protocols for future systems.

AWS Engineering is responsible for the design of all electrical and mechanical systems within all Amazon DCs worldwide. The team works directly with operations, security teams, field engineering, and construction management to implement designs that are functional, practical, and innovative.
The team is seeking a Senior High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Infrastructure Engineering Manager with demonstrated expertise in the design, analysis, and deployment of high-voltage direct current distribution systems, with specific emphasis on 800VDC bus architectures or comparable voltage classes (e.g., 400V, 600VDC, 1500VDC) in industrial, utility, transportation, renewable energy, or large-scale power infrastructure applications.
This is a highly specialized, foundational engineering role on a newly formed team chartered to design and develop a next-generation, facility-scale High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power architecture purpose-built for Generative AI compute loads

This is a greenfield, industry-defining effort - reference designs at this scale and application do not broadly exist in the data center industry. As such, we are seeking engineers with deep domain expertise in high-power HVDC and power conversion systems who bring the intellectual foundation and engineering rigor to translate that expertise into a novel data center context. Direct data center experience is welcomed but is not a prerequisite for this role
You will be responsible for delivery of projects, applying design quality controls, and providing technical guidance to team members.

As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for the design of prototypical DC facilities, localization of conceptual innovations, solving large-scale implementation issues, and building strong relationships with the regional industry. This role represents a rare opportunity to define a new class of data center power infrastructure from the ground up. The successful candidate will not be expected to know all the answers on day one - they will be expected to have the engineering depth, intellectual rigor, and collaborative mindset to help build them.
Anticipated travel: up to 25%
Key job responsibilities
Develop strategic solutions that meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary and redundancy requirements
Conceive, initiate, and lead projects with widespread impact on infrastructure design, innovation, and implementation
Set the standard for engineering, test, and best practices; drive process improvements across the organization
Decompose complex problems into straightforward and actionable solutions
Be a leader within the group and within internal and external teams that support our data centers
Provide technical oversight of the Regional Electrical and Mechanical Basis of Design (BOD)
Serve as a technical advisor for AWS datacenter electrical and mechanical designs
Work with internal teams to understand user requirements
Work with local agencies having jurisdiction and certification agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes
A day in the life
In this role, you'll lead the technical strategy for data center infrastructure design across your region, working on complex projects that impact how we deliver capacity and innovation globally

You might spend your morning reviewing electrical and mechanical designs with your engineering team, then transition to presenting a business case to leadership on a new cooling technology that could reduce costs without compromising reliability. Later, you could be collaborating with construction teams to solve implementation challenges on an active project, or meeting with local agencies to ensure our designs meet all compliance requirements. You'll also mentor engineers on your team, helping them develop their expertise in mission-critical systems while fostering a culture of creative problem-solving and continuous improvement.
About the team
We are a global engineering organization dedicated to designing resilient, cost-effective data center facilities that support AWS's rapid growth

Our team includes Architects, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Control Engineers who work collaboratively to challenge conventional thinking and develop innovative solutions. We partner closely with operations, security, field engineering, and construction management teams to ensure our designs are not only technically sound but also practical and implementable. Our vision is to establish design procedures and protocols that set industry standards while meeting the evolving demands of cloud infrastructure.

You'll be joining a group that values technical excellence, creative problem-solving, and strong cross-functional relationships with both internal teams and regional industry partners.
