Job description

The Makerspace Program Manager is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of STEAM-oriented programs throughout Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. Designs, implements, and oversees a comprehensive program that inspires Club members to be creative thinkers and learners through making, engineering, design, and integration of art. Supports Club staff efforts to integrate instructional strategies and multiple technologies that promote cooperative and project-based learning through an interdisciplinary and STEAM curriculum. 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Leadership: 

  • Supports and mirrors the culture, mission, values, and core beliefs of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. 

  • Ensures a healthy and safe environment with high-quality STEAM Makerspace programs and services that prepares youth for success. 

  • Plans and coordinates all STEAM related educational activities, including the purchase and planned use of tools and resources. 

  • Plans and designs learning activities to promote Club program staff development in STEAM related fields. 

  • Provides guidance and coaching to Club program staff on educational and instructional methodology related to the implementation of project-based curriculum. 

  • Organizes a Club-wide STEAM science fair. 

  • Creates a dynamic, positive work environment for staff members. Maintains close daily contact with direct and indirect reports. Provides coaching, training opportunities, redirection, and encouragement; helps develop skill set necessary for internal promotion.   

  • Implements and ensures adherence to BGCS’s policies and procedures.  

  • Provides sound judgement and decision-making. Acts quickly in emergency situations. 

  • Promotes an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces diversity. 

Curriculum & Program Support: 

  • Identifies and utilizes best practices for conducting STEAM education. 

  • Identifies and applies educational and technology-related research and instructional design principles in guiding use of technology in education. 

  • Works to integrate art-thinking and making routines into the engineering and design process. 

  • Identifies specific age-appropriate objectives and collaborates with K-12 teachers to increase STEAM, design, innovation, and makerspace opportunities among the student community. 

  • Designs, develops, assesses, and manages STEAM learning experiences. Develops criteria to demonstrate student impact and learning success. 

Makerspace Lab Management & Supervision: 

  • Maintains machines, tools, materials, safe use, and schedule of the Makerspaces. 

  • Researches and recommends the purchase of appropriate STEAM tools and resources for classroom use. Ensures Club staff are appropriately trained. 

  • Troubleshoots minor issues or malfunctions of hardware or software and works with hardware consultants to identify and troubleshoot major issues in the Makerspace labs. 

  • Works with Branch leadership to ensure Makerspaces remain safe, clean, and organized. 

  • Promotes an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces diversity. 

  • Models positive guidance and discipline techniques to redirect member behavior issues. 

  • Promotes and demonstrates active supervision techniques when working with Club members.  

Community Outreach: 

  • Facilitates connections with other makerspace communities and external organizations to promote program participation and provide collaborative opportunities. 

  • Works with Club staff to create and disseminate information to various stakeholders about student projects and progress. 

  • Collaborates with community organizations, colleges, and universities to provide and/or expand co-curricular programming which supports student success. 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.  

  • Minimum 5 years’ teaching experience in the sciences, engineering technology, and/or the arts with a strong personal interest and exposure to all 3 disciplines. 

  • Knowledge of and experience with current best practices in STEAM education. 

  • Strong classroom management skills. 

  • Experience coaching staff teachers and/or leading professional development programs. 

  • Knowledge of online educational websites, resources, platforms, and apps pertinent to the teaching of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. 

  • Knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment-driven instruction. 

  • Experience writing and designing curriculum. 

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite and be comfortable adapting to new technology. 

  • Strong Google Apps for Education skills. 

  • Experience or familiarity with tools or concepts such as 3D printing, AutoCAD, Arduino, Makey-Makey, Codecademy, Tynker, Scratch, BeeBot, Lego MindStorms, laser-engraving, and robotics 

  • Effective written, verbal, and technology-based communication skills. 

  • Leadership ability in the use, adaptation, and introduction of a wide array of technology to support and deepen student learning and instruction. 

  • Flawless ethics and integrity. 

  • Safety oriented mindset. 

Recommended: 

  • Master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university. 

  • Direct youth programming experience. 

  • Experience working in a non-profit setting.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Work environment is social: divided between typical office setting and roaming field work. 

  • Must be able to complete work satisfactorily despite significant, frequent distractions throughout the workday. 

  • Workload and working hours may fluctuate throughout the year. 

  • Split shifts and longer than 8-hour days may be necessary. 

  • Occasional outdoor programming/activities may be required. 

  • Frequent deadlines for deliverables and program reporting. 

  • May be required to drive Club vehicles, including a 15-passenger minibus. 

  • Occasional Saturday or late in the evening programming or events may occur where attendance or assistance are required.
