What does a Director Java do?

A Director Java is a senior-level IT leader responsible for overseeing teams that design, develop, and maintain Java-based applications within an organization. They set technical strategies, ensure best coding practices, and guide architectural decisions to align software projects with business goals. Additionally, they manage and mentor engineering teams, coordinate cross-departmental efforts, and often collaborate with stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions. Their role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring deep expertise in Java and leadership skills.

What are the typical leadership responsibilities of a Director Java, and how do they interact with development teams?

As a Director Java, you'll oversee multiple Java development teams, guiding project delivery, setting technical direction, and ensuring code quality standards are met. This role often involves close collaboration with senior engineers, architects, and cross-functional product teams to align technology strategies with business objectives. You'll be responsible for mentoring team leads, facilitating communication between stakeholders, and resolving high-level technical challenges. Regularly, you'll also review project progress, allocate resources, and help define career paths for team members, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

The main difference between a Director Java and a Java Developer lies in their responsibilities and experience. Directors focus on strategic leadership, team management, and project oversight, often requiring leadership credentials. Java Developers are primarily involved in coding and technical tasks, with a focus on software development. Both roles are essential in tech organizations but serve different functions within the software development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director Java, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director Java, you need advanced expertise in Java development, solid experience in software architecture, and a background in managing large-scale technology projects, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with enterprise Java frameworks (like Spring), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and project management tools is typically required, along with certifications like Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer (OCPJP) being advantageous. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and strong communication skills help foster team collaboration and drive innovative solutions. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering robust software systems, leading high-performing teams, and aligning technology initiatives with business goals.

Job description

What if you could use your technology skills to develop a product that impacts the way communities' hospitals, homes, sports stadiums, and schools across the world are built? Construction impacts the lives of nearly everyone in the world, and yet it's also one of the world's least digitized industries. That's why we're looking for a talented Staff Software Engineer to join Procore's Custom Fields team, which is the core of how our users customize each tool to meet their particular business processes.

As a Staff Software Engineer at Procore, you're given the unique opportunity to partner intimately with our customer base, translating their fundamental needs into technological SaaS solutions. Backed by the might of our teams, we'll provide you with the tools and resources needed to achieve extraordinary results that render a significant impact extending beyond the boundaries of traditional engineering roles.

This position will report to a Senior Manager and will be based in our Austin, Texas location. We're looking for someone to join our team immediately.

What you'll do:

  • Help establish standards for development teams and collaborate on initiatives with infrastructure, platform, and other software engineering teams

  • Assist fellow teammates by conducting code reviews and pairing

  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and UX to design and build solutions that delight users and solve critical business problems

  • Serve as a leader and mentor to more junior engineers within your team

  • Leverage our tech stack: Primarily Ruby/Rails/Node.js/React/Postgres hosted on AWS and increasingly using Kubernetes and languages such as Java and Typescript, CircleCI for Continuous Integration, and a combination of ArgoCD and an in-house tool for CD.

  • Leverage AI-assisted development workflows across planning, implementation, testing, and incident response to improve delivery speed and engineering quality

What we're looking for:

  • 8+ years experience in software engineering fundamentals, Test Driven Development and Design concepts (Ruby on Rails, Python, Javascript, Java, Node.js or similar languages preferred)

  • Professional experience with React, Node.js, Ruby/Ruby on Rails or Java is preferred

  • Experience applying agentic SDLC practices (e.g., AI-assisted planning, coding, testing, and release workflows) to improve engineering velocity and software quality

  • Understanding of the tradeoffs between technical, analytical and product goals, and are adept at formulating solutions that satisfy all of these needs

  • Experience in working with software, platforms, and infrastructure at scale (we run thousands of hosts and have millions of users)

  • Experience leading large initiatives with the ability to course-correct as needed

  • Proven expertise with modern web development including development, testing, staging, deploying, and monitoring

  • Experience in building modern Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery systems at scale

  • Understanding the tradeoffs between short-term and long-term goals and balancing immediate needs with strategic initiatives

  • Ability to consistently evaluate current technical approaches to continue to be industry best-of-class

  • Experience mentoring and developing more junior-level engineers
