Job description

Career Area:
Engineering
Job Description:
Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do - but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here - we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
Caterpillar products generate and process large volumes of data from sensors, on-board models and control algorithms in real time, creating real-world machine usage information. As part of the overall digital strategy, Caterpillar has developed an integrated family of machine-based information technology products that interconnect machines to provide real-time guidance, tracking, monitoring and supervisory control of mining fleets. This family of products is branded MineStar and connects with other mining and business information systems as an integral part of the Mining Technology Enabled Solutions vision.
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Java Developer to join a multidisciplinary delivery team building world-class mining software. In addition to hands-on Java development, this role serves as a custom agent squad lead, directing AI-enabled delivery workflows as a first-class part of the software development lifecycle. The role remains accountable for technical outcomes, quality, security and maintainability while using the squad and related AI engineering tools to improve delivery speed, consistency and engineering effectiveness.
What You Will Do:
  • Design, build and maintain Java-based applications, microservices and APIs that support the Caterpillar MineStar ecosystem.
  • Produce clean, well-tested and maintainable code aligned with agreed engineering standards, with quality, security, resilience, automated testing, peer review and documentation built in.
  • Lead delivery of features and technical initiatives using AI tooling and agentic workflows, translating delivery requirements into structured work that can be executed and validated across multiple AI agents.
  • Treat AI agents as integrated members of the delivery team while retaining clear human accountability for technical decisions, delivered outcomes and production readiness.
  • Orchestrate agentic AI capabilities across requirements decomposition, solution design, implementation, test generation, documentation, code review, defect triage, root-cause analysis and production support.
  • Validate all AI-generated outputs against requirements, MineStar domain realities, architecture standards, secure coding practices and quality expectations before they are accepted or released.
  • Work with the scrum team to deliver features end-to-end, from refinement and estimation through implementation, testing, release and operational support.
  • Contribute to solution architecture and technical decision-making for complex problems, creating clear design artefacts and architecture decisions that support delivery and ongoing support.
  • Establish and apply quality gates for AI-assisted development, identify failure modes, and ensure the use of AI remains responsible, traceable and compliant with engineering governance.
  • Participate in code and design reviews, promoting engineering standards and continuous improvement in quality, performance, security and reliability.
  • Take ownership of assigned technical outcomes, communicating progress, risks and dependencies and helping the team deliver predictably.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering and Quality Engineering to clarify requirements, align acceptance criteria and incorporate feedback.
  • Support production operations by monitoring services, troubleshooting incidents, performing root-cause analysis and implementing sustainable fixes.
  • Create reusable agentic AI patterns, prompts, skills, templates and playbooks that can be adopted by other MineStar teams.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, coaching, demonstrations and knowledge sharing, raising capability in Java engineering and AI-native software delivery.
  • Share evidence of delivery impact, lessons learned and effective practices through showcases, workshops and engineering communities.

What You Will Have:
Programming: Knowledge of relevant programming languages and tools; ability to test, write, design, debug, troubleshoot and maintain source codes and computer programs.
  • Advanced Java development using Spring and Spring Boot.
  • Microservices and distributed architecture.
  • RESTful APIs and integration patterns.
  • Modern database design and technologies.
  • Modern security principles, secure coding practices and resilient service design.

Artificial Intelligence: Knowledge of the concepts, technologies and methodologies of artificial intelligence (AI); ability to develop, implement and/or apply artificial intelligence products and services in specific industry domain to achieve business goals.
  • Ability to develop and use a squad of interactive custom agents to plan, coordinate and validate software delivery work.
  • Understanding of prompt engineering, agentic workflows, AI orchestration and human-in-the-loop validation.
  • Ability to assess AI-generated code and artefacts for correctness, security, maintainability, architecture fit and production readiness.
  • Ability to develop reusable prompts, skills, workflow patterns and delivery guidance from practical experience.
  • Awareness of responsible AI, AI governance, risk assessment and quality evaluation.
  • Develops and uses agentic AI tooling to improve delivery flow, test automation, documentation and technical-debt reduction without compromising engineering quality.
  • Builds trust in AI-enabled delivery through disciplined validation, transparent governance and clear accountability.
  • Creates repeatable practices that raise AI-native engineering capability across the wider MineStar organization.

Software Development Life Cycle: Knowledge of software development life cycle; ability to use a structured methodology for delivering and managing new or enhanced software products to the marketplace.
  • Build, test, dependency management, CI/CD and DevOps tooling.
  • Automated testing, code review, observability and software quality practices.
  • Delivers secure, reliable and maintainable Java solutions that create measurable customer and business value.
  • Ability to manage time and agreed priorities while maintaining accountability for outcomes.

Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Strong analytical, architectural, design and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Ability to influence across Product, Engineering, Quality Engineering and other stakeholders.
  • Willingness to learn, experiment, provide and receive feedback, and continuously improve both engineering and AI-enabled delivery practices.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical decisions, risks and delivery evidence.

Considerations For Top Candidates:
  • 7+ years of relevant commercial software development experience, including substantial hands-on Java development using Spring and Spring Boot, Microservices and distributed architecture, and Build, test, dependency management, CI/CD and DevOps tooling.
  • Experience providing technical leadership within a multidisciplinary software delivery team.
  • Practical experience applying AI-enabled development tools, including agentic workflows and AI orchestration, within real software delivery is strongly preferred.
  • Experience creating reusable agentic AI patterns, prompts, skills, templates and playbooks.
