Job description

Accounting at Brex

The Accounting team at Brex ensures we produce accurate and timely financial results to stakeholders to guide the business forward.  We go beyond closing the books - we automate, iterate, and improve processes in close collaboration with partners across the business. The team also serves as power users and thought leaders for Brex's own products. We bring precision and curiosity to everything we build, combining deep ownership with a product mindset to help shape the future of finance.

What you'll do

You will be the principal architect of Brex's financial reporting and technical accounting framework, ensuring the highest level of compliance with GAAP while navigating the complexities of a fast-growing fintech environment. You will be responsible for building a world-class reporting function that meets the rigor of a public company and aligns with the global accounting policies of Capital One. You will also be a key advisor on accounting implications of product launches and other complex transactions. You will work cross-functionally within a detail-oriented environment where creative problem solving is highly valued. The Financial Reporting Director is expected to manage multiple priorities concurrently without compromising quality, accuracy or completeness.

Where you'll work

This role will be based in our Seattle office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work!

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the end-to-end global financial reporting function, ensuring the integrity of consolidated and entity-only US GAAP financial statements for internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead the strategy for regulated entity reporting, ensuring 100% compliance with evolving regulations
  • Act as the subject matter expert, evaluate complex, non-routine transactions and provide technical accounting guidance and disclosure recommendations
  • Iterate and develop GAAP accounting policies and support high-impact business initiatives such as post-merger integration and product launches
  • Establish and maintain a robust library of corporate accounting policies; lead the implementation of new FASB/ SEC standards
  • Lead the design and maturation of an internal control environment in preparation for integration with Capital One's financial reporting standards and SOX requirements
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Legal and other teams to provide proactive accounting for new product launches and business model changes
  • Ensure timely close through the preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations and variance analytics, as well as coordination with FP&A
  • Identify and deliver process improvements via automation, AI initiatives and cross functional collaboration

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree, preferably in Business, Finance, or Accounting
  • CPA license
  • 10+ years of experience, including significant time at a Big 4 accounting firm and/or leadership role in high-growth companies
  • Strong technical accounting and financial reporting knowledge in US GAAP
  • Deep understanding of financial services, credit card processing or payment-related accounting
  • Ability to translate complex accounting jargon into actionable insights for non-finance counterparts
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and address difficult situations in a professional manner
  • Innovative and able to provide "outside of the box" solutions
  • Passion for having an owner's mentality towards responsibilities and for career growth
  • Experience implementing and improving business processes and systems
  • Knowledge and experience using DFIN, Workiva or similar financial reporting platforms

Bonus Points

  • Experience operating within a public company environment
  • Advanced proficiency in data analytics and a product mindset toward accounting systems
  • Direct experience applying AI to streamline the financial reporting or research process

Compensation

The expected salary range for this role is $252,216 - $315,270. However, the starting base pay will depend on several factors, including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package
