Job Summary/Basic Function:

Responsible for the overall program development for students; selecting, training and supervising Resident Assistants integrating sensitivity to all students, guiding the development of a strong-directed community environment, while managing hall facilities, responding to crises, advising student hall council.

Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is a department that accommodates approximately 3,700 students and staff across 12 on-campus living communities, which include traditional residence halls, suite-style, and apartment-style housing options. Our department is dedicated to supporting the academic and personal success of our residents. As we continue to grow and evolve, we aim to serve a broad range of students from across the region, including those from rural areas and those who are the first in their families to attend college.

Level Scope:

Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. Sets and delegates day-to-day tasks to achieve operational objectives. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or campus policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Problems typically involve a single area, process or constituent group. Ensures accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Essential Functions:

60% of the Time the Resident Director:

  • Assists in the planning and implementation of the Residence Life fall and spring trainings, regular RA in-services, in-hall staff training and team development.
  • Supervises student staff and student desk workers, including hiring and training, and maintains a strong working relationship with the facility staff assigned to their building(s).
  • Responsible for managing the daily operations of the residential area, including managing desk
    operations, initiating maintenance and custodial work orders, ensuring that occupancy procedures are followed.
  • Serves as the primary student conduct officer for the hall/area and issues appropriate behavioral
    sanctions according to University and Housing policy. Conducts case adjudications.
  • Facilitating mediations between roommates/suitemates/floormates
  • Holds individual interactions such as conduct hearings, biweekly one on one meetings with RAs and other individual student interactions.
  • Coordinate educational initiatives and implement residential curriculum programming model

35% of Time the Resident Director must:

  • Serve on 24-hour Resident Director on Call (RDOC) duty (day, evening, holiday, and weekend) 365 days a year in rotation with other Housing & Residence Life staff supporting RAs on call and responding to a variety of emergencies. On-call services include crisis and emergency response, facility maintenance, direction and support for student staff, and conflict resolution for residents living in on-campus housing facilities (approximately 3000 students).
  • Maintains an active presence & participation in student life programming initiatives on campus.
  • Design and participate in departmental and university-wide professional development opportunities.
  • Determined by department needs

5% of Time the Resident Director must perform:

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This includes but is not limited to at least 40 hours per year for full time employees dedicated to helping with broad divisional or institution programs or initiatives that may be outside the department such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Parent & Family Weekend, Bronco Day, Commencement, or other special projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or relevant experience

$49,732.80 annually. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
