The Department of Educational Policy Studies, located in the College of Education and Human Development, offers graduate degrees and certificates. The department has a strong reputation for excellent teaching, outstanding research and scholarly productivity, and a diverse student body. More than twenty tenured/tenure-track faculty and clinical faculty in the department contribute to Georgia State University’s ranking as the fourth-best undergraduate teaching university by U.S. News & World Report magazine in 2025. Faculty and students collaborate with the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence, the Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University, the Urban Child Study Center, and the Center for Evaluation and Research Services, among other centers. The department houses the Principals Center, which is a collaborative effort to provide cutting edge professional learning for school leaders and the UCEA sponsored Center for Urban School Leadership (USL). The Department of Educational Policy Studies at Georgia State University invites applications for non-tenure-track position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership starting August 2027. At time of appointment, candidates must have an earned doctorate in Educational Leadership (or a closely related field). The position entails teaching (up to four courses per semester) and mentoring EdD and master’s students. Presence on campus for face-to-face teaching and mentoring of students is an essential function of the position. The modality, location and day/time of classes is at the sole discretion of the department, and some classes do take place on Saturdays. The successful applicant will be expected to advise and mentor graduate students, serve on graduate student dissertation committees, work with diverse student populations, provide service to the university and profession, and communicate effectively with educational partners. This role also requires program coordination of leadership certification programs. The coordinator is responsible for recruiting students, overseeing the program, monitoring student progress, assessing student portfolios, submitting program reports, and building partnerships with PK-12 school districts.

Required At time of appointment, the successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in Educational Leadership or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Educational Leadership
• Earned doctorate from a public or other not-for-profit institution
• Current licensure or certification as an educational leader (e.g., principal and/or superintendent)
• Training or certification as an evaluator of teacher and leader performance (e.g., Georgia’s TKES/LKES or an equivalent system)

Preferred Experiences

• Teaching in a PK-12 setting
• Progressively responsible leadership at the PK-12 school and district levels, with a track record of advancement into roles of increasing responsibility and scope
• Supervising internships, residencies, or other clinical/field experiences
• Mentoring and advising teachers, educational leaders, and doctoral students, including dissertation or capstone work
• Evaluating, improving, and managing educational programs and initiatives
• Supporting program accreditation and standards alignment (e.g., CAEP, NELP)
• Leading a significant, successful educational improvement initiative, particularly in learning and instruction, community engagement, professional capacity building, and/or operations and management

Familiarity with state educator certification processes (in Georgia, the Professional Standards Commission)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

• Knowledge of current issues facing PK-12 schools and districts and those who lead them
• Knowledge of educational leadership research, theory, and professional standards (e.g., PSEL, NELP)
• Knowledge of adult learning principles for teaching experienced practitioners

Skills

• Skilled in using and modeling instructional technology with graduate students, and in preparing them to use and model it with their own faculty and staff
• Skilled in quantitative and/or qualitative research methodology
• Skilled in curriculum and course design

Abilities

• Ability to prepare aspiring leaders to engage courageously with complex, current issues
• Ability to teach dynamically across master’s, specialist (Ed.S.), and doctoral (Ed.D.) courses in educational leadership
• Ability to teach in person, online, and in hybrid formats
• Ability to teach students to apply research to problems of practice in PK-12 settings
• Ability to mentor graduate students and to chair and serve on dissertation committees
• Ability to use program and student data for continuous improvement
• Ability to collaborate with district partners on clinical placements and internships
• Ability to build professional relationships across the educational leadership community and with other PK-12 stakeholders
