Job Summary
Newberry Groups seeks an experienced Legacy Support Engineer with strong mainframe IDMS and Db2 z/OS DBA expertise to maintain, support, and enhance enterprise legacy database systems. This position focuses on the stability, performance, and modernization support of high-visibility production environments within our Public Sector client.
Location
This is a full-time telecommuting role. The applicant must reside in the United States and be eligible to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide daily operational support for legacy mainframe applications and associated databases.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues across legacy platforms, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Analyze system performance, identify tuning opportunities, and execute optimization tasks.
  • Support batch processing operations, job scheduling, and production workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement enhancements, patches, and updates.
  • Participate in incident management, root-cause analysis, and long-term remediation planning.
  • Assist with maintenance windows, release cycles, and environment migrations as needed.
  • Document processes, technical changes, and system configurations to support knowledge continuity.
Basic Qualifications and Skills Required
  • 7+ years supporting legacy/mainframe systems in production environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work remotely with distributed teams and manage tasks independently.
  • Strong mainframe background, including support, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  • Mainframe Database Administrator experience with IDMS (DL/I-style databases, schema/subschema), including maintenance, upgrades/patching, backup/recovery, performance tuning, and resolving incidents
  • Working knowledge of Db2 z/OS, SQL, and database administration fundamentals within mainframe environments.
  • Experience supporting traditional batch systems, JCL, and production operations.
  • Occasional off-hours support may be required for production emergencies or planned maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Familiarity with Control-M workload automation (job scheduling, calendar setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting).
  • Experience with modernization initiatives or migrations of legacy platforms.
  • Exposure to federal or enterprise environments with mature change-control processes.
