We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Construction Controller / Senior Accountant to manage the day-to-day accounting and financial functions of a growing commercial construction company.
This is not a purely supervisory Controller position. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working directly in QuickBooks, processing and reviewing accounting transactions, managing payroll and billing, preparing WIP schedules, reconciling accounts, and working closely with project managers and company leadership.
The ideal candidate has direct accounting experience with a general contractor, subcontractor, roofing contractor, specialty trade contractor, or similar construction company and understands how construction accounting differs from traditional corporate accounting.
This position will have responsibility for maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening internal controls, improving financial visibility, and supporting the continued growth of the company.
Requirements
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
  • Maintainaccurate job-cost accounting across active construction projects.
  • Reviewproject costs, cost codes, commitments, billings, change orders andfinancial performance.
  • Prepareand maintain monthly WIP schedules.
  • Understandand apply percentage-of-completion and appropriate constructionrevenue-recognition principles.
  • Workdirectly with Project Managers and Operations to reconcile actual projectactivity with accounting records.
  • Identifyjob-cost discrepancies, margin erosion, over/under-billing and otherfinancial issues early.
  • Maintainaccurate project-level profitability reporting.

AIA Billing & Accounts Receivable
  • Prepareand/or review AIA G702/G703 pay applications and other constructionbilling.
  • Manageprogress billing, retain, change-order billing and supportingdocumentation.
  • Ensurepay applications are accurate, complete and submitted according tocontractual deadlines.
  • MaintainAR aging and actively support collections.
  • Trackoutstanding receivables, retain and payment status by project.
  • Coordinatewith Project Managers and clients to resolve billing discrepancies.

Accounts Payable & Subcontractor Accounting
  • Manageand review vendor and subcontractor invoices.
  • Ensurecosts are coded to the correct projects and cost codes.
  • Maintainsubcontractor/vendor documentation, including W-9s, insurance informationand other required records.
  • Supportlien-waiver and subcontractor payment documentation processes.
  • Reviewvendor statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Maintainappropriate controls over vendor creation and vendor banking-informationchanges.
  • Assistwith 1099 preparation and year-end vendor reporting.

QuickBooks & Payroll
  • Maintainaccurate accounting records in QuickBooks Enterprise.
  • Processand/or oversee QuickBooks Payroll.
  • Maintainpayroll records and reconcile payroll-related accounts.
  • Reconcilebank accounts and company credit cards.
  • Prepareand review journal entries.
  • Maintainthe general ledger and supporting schedules.
  • Ensuretransactions are properly classified between project costs, overhead andother accounts.

Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
  • Ownand execute the monthly financial close.
  • Preparemonthly P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow reporting.
  • Reconcilebalance-sheet accounts and maintain supporting schedules.
  • Reviewproject profitability and company financial performance with leadership.
  • Maintainaccurate WIP and revenue-recognition reporting.
  • Assistwith annual budgeting, forecasting and financial planning.
  • Monitorcash flow and provide short-term cash-flow forecasting.
  • Coordinatewith outside CPA, tax advisors, banks, insurance providers and otherfinancial partners.

Internal Controls
  • Establishand maintain strong accounting and financial controls.
  • Maintainappropriate segregation of duties around vendor setup, payment approval,payment processing and bank reconciliation.
  • Maintainsupporting documentation for financial transactions.
  • Monitorcompany credit-card usage and expense documentation.
  • Maintainappropriate accounting-system permissions and audit trails.
  • Supportfinancial reviews and audits.
  • Identifyunusual transactions or accounting discrepancies and escalate thempromptly to leadership.

Office & Accounting Administration
  • Helpmaintain an organized and efficient accounting/administrative function.
  • Maintainaccounting records and documentation.
  • Coordinateaccounting-related communication with employees, vendors andsubcontractors.
  • Supportpayroll, insurance, banking, licensing and other administrative functionsas needed.
  • Helpimprove accounting procedures and create scalable processes as the companygrows.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+years of accounting/bookkeeping experience, with significant hands-onresponsibility.
  • Directconstruction accounting experience is required.
  • Experienceworking for a general contractor, subcontractor, roofing company,specialty trade contractor or similar construction business stronglypreferred.
  • Strongworking knowledge of QuickBooks, preferably QuickBooks Enterprise.
  • Hands-onpayroll experience; QuickBooks Payroll experience preferred.
  • Strongunderstanding of construction job costing and WIP.
  • Experiencewith construction progress billing and AIA G702/G703 pay applications.
  • Workingknowledge of AP, AR, payroll, bank reconciliations, credit-cardreconciliations and general ledger accounting.
  • Abilityto perform and manage month-end close.
  • StrongExcel skills.
  • Strongattention to detail and organizational ability.
  • Abilityto work independently while communicating effectively with ProjectManagers, Operations and executive leadership.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Accountingdegree or equivalent practical accounting experience.
  • Controller,Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant or Full-Charge Bookkeeper experiencewithin construction.
  • Experiencewith commercial general contracting.
  • Experiencewith construction contracts, retain, change orders, lien waivers andsubcontractor billing.
  • Experiencesupporting multiple construction projects simultaneously.
  • Experienceimproving accounting procedures and internal controls.

CPA certification is welcome but not required. Direct, hands-on construction accounting experience is more important for this position.
