Job description

CNC Machinist – Lathe

Reports to: Manufacturing Parts Supervisor/Manager


Summary:

Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose CNC and Numerical Control (NC) machines and machining to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties:


Essential Functions:

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawing, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work-piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Has the ability to generate basic part programs from a blueprint.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and material on machines as necessary to machine parts as required. 
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth an angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media as required.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished work-piece to specifications, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
  • Set up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Confers with production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks on machines as well as deburring, tool sharpening and use of crane required.


Required Skills & Knowledge: 

  • 5-10 years experience in set-up of CNC Lathe machines.  
  • Knowledge in use of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators and scales.
  • Mastercam, Solidworks  and Okuma &Mori Seiki experience a plus.   
  • CNC programming experienced desired.
  • Strong understanding in blue print reading/geometric tolerance interpretation.
  • Must possess basic math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material fabrication. 
  • Mechanical and technical skills that require operators who understand CAD/CAM technology. 


Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events. 
  • Excellent manual dexterity, muscular control and delicate touch to accomplish precision work without damage to valuable molds and tooling.
  • Ability to use the basic hand tools and measuring tools. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Problem solving and computer skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work independently
  • Time Management and personal discipline.
  • Safety conscience and follow safety rules when operating machine tools and assembling heavy mold parts.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing at a work station for extended periods of time doing repetitive movements.
  • Must be able to move parts and equipment weigh up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis.
