Another Source's client, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), is recruiting a Building Envelope Architect/Engineer to join their team in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This position is hybrid eligible, with the opportunity to work remotely one day per week with supervisor approval. Relocation assistance is available for discussion.

From planning and building to operating and maintaining campus facilities, the team takes a long-term view of how spaces perform and how they contribute to the University experience.

This newly created position offers the opportunity to become a key technical resource within Facilities Management, helping UNC Charlotte connect smart design decisions with long-term building performance and maintainability. You'll have the chance to influence standards and projects across the campus while working alongside architects, engineers, external design partners, project teams, and the skilled trades professionals who know these facilities firsthand.

About this role:

Reporting to the Director of Asset Management, the Building Envelope Architect/Engineer will serve as UNC Charlotte's primary technical authority for the physical integrity and performance of the campus built environment. Your scope will span building enclosures-including roofs, walls, glazing, air barriers, and moisture management-as well as interior architectural finishes and vertical transportation systems.

As a new position, this is an opportunity to help shape how UNC Charlotte approaches total building performance. You'll bridge the gap between design and operations, bringing a lifecycle perspective to projects and helping ensure new construction and renovations are durable, maintainable, code compliant, and designed for the realities of North Carolina's humid subtropical climate.

This is a hands-on "bridge" role for someone who is equally comfortable reviewing design documents with architects and engineers and walking rooftops, mechanical spaces, and active project sites alongside skilled trade technicians.

Your Contribution Will Likely Include

    Serve as the University's technical authority for building enclosure systems, interior architectural finishes, and vertical transportation systems.
  • Establish, maintain, and help enforce Design and Construction Manual (DCM) standards, applying building science principles related to thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, airflow, and long-term performance.
  • Review design documents and participate in project planning to identify building envelope, code compliance, maintainability, and lifecycle concerns before they become operational issues.
  • Direct Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) activities for capital projects, helping ensure constructed systems perform as intended.
  • Conduct forensic investigations of building failures, including water intrusion, air barrier deficiencies, moisture-related problems, and flooring substrate issues.
  • Develop practical remediation strategies that balance technical performance, lifecycle cost, and ongoing maintenance requirements.
  • Partner closely with Maintenance Operations and skilled trades-including Envelope, Paint, Flooring, Carpentry, and Elevator teams-to ensure design decisions support long-term maintainability.
  • Serve as a technical liaison with external architects, engineers, consultants, and design firms, advocating for materials and systems that protect the University's lifecycle interests.
  • Support asset management and lifecycle planning for building enclosure, interior finish, and vertical transportation systems.
  • Protect the integrity of fire ratings, thermal boundaries, acoustic separations, and other critical building systems during renovations and modifications.
  • Apply applicable requirements of the North Carolina International Building Code, NC Energy Conservation Code, and ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators.
  • Champion a "Total Building Performance" approach that helps UNC Charlotte reduce risk, improve durability, and minimize total cost of ownership.

Experience You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering and at least five years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform complex building science analysis and forensic investigations.
  • Degree(s) from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Strong knowledge of building science principles, including thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, and airflow management as they relate to building envelopes.
  • Ability to evaluate building performance and diagnose complex system failures.
  • Experience working across the design-to-operations lifecycle and collaborating effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, facilities professionals, and skilled
