Position: Food Service Cook
Status: Part-Time - Six (6) Hours Per Day
Supervisor: Food Service Director, Building Principal, and Superintendent of Schools
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must hold all food-handler and food-preparation certifications required by the State of Illinois and DuPage County.
  • Previous experience in food preparation, meal service, or a related food service setting required; school district experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of large-quantity food preparation, safe food-handling procedures, meal service practices, sanitation requirements, and commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to follow and support district policies, administrative procedures, regulations, and directives.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, administrators, teachers, food service personnel, district support staff, and community members.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Ability to travel between district cafeterias for training, substitute coverage, or other assigned purposes.
  • Physical condition must be commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Additional qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board of Education.

Position Overview
The Food Service Cook supports the preparation and service of nutritious meals for students and staff in a clean, safe, welcoming, and caring environment. Under the direction of the Food Service Director, the Food Service Cook assists with meal preparation, food service, sanitation, inventory procedures, and the daily operation of the school kitchen.
The Food Service Cook follows all applicable district, state, county, and federal food service requirements while helping ensure meals are prepared and served safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established menus and nutritional standards.
Performance Responsibilities
The criteria listed below describe the essential functions of the position. The exclusion of specific responsibilities does not preclude the assignment of related duties.
Food Preparation and Meal Service
  1. Assists the Food Service Director with the implementation and operation of the district's food service program.
  2. Prepares and assists with the preparation of nutritious meals in accordance with approved menus, recipes, portion sizes, and nutritional requirements.
  3. Prepares and serves meals on days when students are in attendance and at other times as assigned.
  4. Ensures food is prepared, stored, handled, and served at appropriate temperatures and in accordance with established food safety practices.
  5. Provides courteous and efficient meal service to students and staff.
  6. Assists with receiving, storing, rotating, and organizing food products and kitchen supplies.

Safety, Sanitation, and Equipment
  1. Follows all district, state, county, and federal requirements related to food safety, sanitation, and kitchen operations.
  2. Maintains clean and sanitary food preparation, serving, storage, and dining areas.
  3. Cleans and sanitizes kitchen equipment, utensils, work surfaces, and service areas as assigned.
  4. Uses kitchen equipment safely and properly and reports equipment concerns, maintenance needs, or repair requests to the Food Service Director.
  5. Follows established procedures to ensure that meals are prepared and served safely and maintain the highest possible quality.
  6. Complies with all required food-handler training, certifications, and continuing education requirements.

Records, Communication, and Collaboration
  1. Maintains accurate food production, temperature, inventory, and other required food service records.
  2. Communicates promptly with the Food Service Director regarding supply needs, equipment concerns, food quality, and operational issues.
  3. Maintains positive and professional working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and other members of the school community.
  4. Works collaboratively with food service staff to support efficient kitchen and meal service operations.
  5. Travels to other district cafeterias for training, substitute coverage, or operational support as assigned.

Professional Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrates professionalism, dependability, punctuality, and regular attendance.
  2. Maintains confidentiality regarding students, staff, and district operations.
  3. Supports the mission, goals, and expectations of Burr Ridge CCSD 180.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned by the Food Service Director, Building Principal, or Superintendent.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in a commercial school kitchen and cafeteria environment.
  • The position requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • The employee may be exposed to heat, steam, cleaning products, sharp utensils, and hot kitchen equipment.
  • The employee must be able to safely lift and carry items consistent with the regular duties of the position.
  • Work hours are generally 7:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m., subject to district needs and the school calendar.

Salary and Benefits
  • Starting wage: $20.00 per hour, with placement based on relevant experience.
  • Health insurance benefits are included in accordance with district eligibility requirements and Board policy.

Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal, with input from the Food Service Director, in accordance with district procedures and Board policy.
