Pay Range: $128,400 – $226,435 annual base salary (final offer dependent on experience, education, skills, market conditions, and work location) POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a Senior Staff Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join an optical engineering center of excellence and spearhead the design and development of advanced optical payloads. This senior technical leader will own mechanical architectures for passive, active, and directed-energy optical systems, addressing structural, thermal, and vibration challenges while driving cross-functional integration. The ideal candidate will have deep opto-mechanical design experience on high-performance optical systems (telescopes, laser weapons, imaging sensors), strong analytical and GD&T skills, and proven leadership in guiding and mentoring engineering teams under demanding performance and schedule constraints. RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Lead and mentor a team of opto-mechanical engineers, fostering collaboration across mechanical, optical, electrical, and systems disciplines. Own mechanical architecture for a portfolio of optical payloads, including passive, active, and directed-energy systems. Perform high-precision mechanical analyses and validate designs through modeling, prototyping, and testing. Work closely with optical engineers, payload managers, and program stakeholders to translate system requirements into robust mechanical solutions. Apply design-for-assembly and design-for-manufacturing techniques to ensure producible, maintainable hardware. Develop specifications, support vendor interfaces, and participate in parts selection and configuration control for opto-mechanical components. Prepare and deliver clear technical briefings, design reviews, and status reports to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership and external partners. Tackle complex “form-fit-function” challenges in precision payload subsystems while balancing performance, cost, and schedule. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Basic Qualifications Proficiency with standard design tools applied to opto?mechanical design, such as CAD, CREO, SolidWorks, or similar. Experience as a mechanical engineer with a background in optical, optics, or closely related areas. Experience with design?for?assembly and design-for-manufacturing techniques. Experience with specification development, vendor interface, parts selection, and/or configuration control. Active Top Secret security clearance; U.S. Citizenship required. Additional Qualifications (Desired Skills) Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Sciences, or a related engineering field. Experience in the aerospace and/or defense industry. Prior industry experience with electro-optical systems. Drafting experience and hands-on GD&T expertise. Python knowledge for analysis, tooling, or automation. Experience developing star-tracking positioning systems or similar precision pointing mechanisms. Experience working with budgets and schedules and supporting program planning activities. Security / Clearance Requirement Top Secret clearance required; must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain the required clearance.
