Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), seeks an Anatomy & Physiology instructor to support the Department's teaching mission for undergraduates and medical students and basic science and translational research, and to support the Office of Medical Education (OME). Duties at the JABSOM and UH Manoa will include:
Teaching: 60%
- Instruct Physiology 141 and 142 (Human Anatomy & Physiology) lecture and laboratory and develop a series of Physiology review sessions in each unit.
- Assist teaching components of Physiology 301 and 302 (Advanced Human Anatomy & Physiology) lecture, laboratory and video courses.
- Devise and implement physiology instructional laboratories.
- Responsible for overseeing graduate teaching assistants and advising undergraduate students.
- Assist with Gross Anatomy laboratory instruction for medical students including but not limited to instructing gross anatomy.
- Contribute to online instructional modules for Gross Anatomy dissection.
- Assist with Anatomy & Physiology laboratory instruction for graduate students including but not limited to teaching gross anatomy.
Research: 20%
- Participate in and support of existing research interests.
- Collaborate with other principal investigators engaged in various aspects of cardiovascular or biogenesis research.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals in the field of cardiovascular disease.
- Other scholarly activities as assigned.
Service: 20%
- Serve on committees for the department, school, and/or University.
- Other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, participating in community engagement activities separately or in conjunction with the Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology.
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in Physiology or related Biomedical Science field from an accredited college or university of recognized standing.
- Evidence of ability to teach effectively in a large class and to direct group discussions.
- Evidence of ability to teach undergraduate, graduate and medical students effectively.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
- Ability to organize, coordinate, and deliver anatomy and physiology laboratory instruction for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Ability to provide assistance with instruction to medical students.
- Postdoctoral research and/or teaching experience.
- Previous experience providing lectures for graduate or medical students.
- Sound understanding of anatomy and physiology.
- Previous experience presenting physiology experiments to graduate or medical students.
- Ability to provide instruction utilizing human cadaveric material.
- Experience with online teaching paradigms and curriculum development.
- Experience interacting with undergraduate students in a positive and constructive fashion.
- Ability to apply new educational technologies in the classroom.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor graduate student Teaching Assistants and upper-level undergraduates in instructional delivery.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with other academic faculty.
