The Greater Vallejo Recreation District invites applications for:

Salary Range: $19.25 - $20.50
The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that has been serving area residents for over sixty years. As a Special Service District, GVRD operates as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. GVRD manages 407 acres of public park space including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, and Olympic-size swimming pool and 4 community centers. GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land.
GVRD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. With 30 plus full time and approximately 155 part-time and seasonal employees, GVRD operates on a 2025-2026 fiscal year budget of $12.9 million for general fund operations and Measure K funding amounting to $2.2 million. The Measure K funding is being utilized to purchase necessary equipment, improve parks, facilities.
Job Description:
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.
DEFINITION
Under general supervision assist full-time maintenance crew and performs skilled work in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the upkeep of parks, athletic fields, landscaped areas, trails, and recreational facilities. The employee operates a variety of vehicles and equipment while assisting with grounds maintenance, landscaping, and facility improvements.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED EXERCISED
Receive immediate supervision from higher level maintenance staff.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
  1. Assist full-time maintenance crew in all aspects of park, facilities and buildings maintenance as directed.
  2. Operate equipment such as tractors, mowers, utility vehicles, loaders, and other grounds maintenance machinery.
  3. Mow, trim, edge, and maintain turf areas, sports fields, and landscaped grounds.
  4. Perform routine inspections, cleaning, fueling, and minor maintenance of equipment.
  5. Follow all safety procedures and report equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions.
  6. Maintain accurate records of equipment use and maintenance activities.
  7. Maintain landscaping in District parks, grounds and buildings using a variety of hand and power tools; prune shrubs and trees; mow and edge lawns and fields as directed.
  8. Perform minor repairs on irrigation system; dig holes to expose irrigation pipe; repair as needed.
  9. Clean park grounds, buildings and facilities; clean restrooms, offices and empty trash receptacles; haul thrash and debris as directed.
  10. Routinely inspect walls, sidewalks and play equipment for graffiti and remove as directed.
  11. Inspect play equipment for unsafe structures and hazards; repair as necessary of refer to supervisor.
  12. Prepare baseball and softball fields in advance of games, including watering, dragging the infields, and chalking appropriate lines; set out bases; clean dugouts and bleachers and empty thrash.
  13. Perform turf maintenance functions on turf areas including mowing, fertilizing, aerating topdressing, and overseeing as directed.
  14. Perform routine maintenance on work trucks; wash and detail trucks.
  15. Work day or evenings hours and assigned weekends and holidays.

Marginal Functions:
  1. Provide support as needed for various recreation programs.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  1. Basic methods and techniques of general construction, grounds maintenance and custodial work.
  2. Basic operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.

Ability to:
  1. Learn to perform a variety of maintenance, construction, custodial and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  2. Learn fertilizer composition and application; plant identification, care, pruning, and maintenance practices.
  3. Learn mowing techniques and operation of a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  4. Perform heavy manual labor and a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  5. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  7. Maintain mental capacity, which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and ability would be:
Experience:
Some general maintenance experience performing similar maintenance work within park, landscaped areas and building facilities is desirable.
Education:
Graduation from High School or equivalent
License or Certificate
Possession of valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Field environment, travel from site to site; exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, heat, cold and inclement weather conditions; work around slippery or uneven surfaces, and around heavy construction equipment.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling and crawling; working at heights; standing for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
