Job Title: Director of Data and Analytics
Location: Richmond, Virginia
Starting Compensation Range: $160,000 - $200,000 per year
The Director of Data and Analytics is responsible for defining, architecting, and executing Carter's enterprise-wide data strategy while building and leading a high-performing engineering and analytics organization. The Director will manage, mentor, and scale the team to support Carter's evolving data and analytics needs.
A key priority for the role is the strategic modernization of Carter's enterprise data platform through the migration to Microsoft Fabric. The Director will lead this multi-phase transformation, overseeing the architecture, execution, and adoption of the new platform while coordinating the migration and eventual decommissioning of Carter's legacy SQL Server Data Warehouse and Snowflake environments.
What You Will Do:
  • Microsoft Fabric Architecture and Platform Ownership: Lead design, governance, and deployment of Carter's Microsoft Fabric enterprise environment (OneLake, Lakehouse/Warehouse, Delta Parquet, and Medallion architecture) to serve as single source of truth across all business units
  • Legacy DWH Migration and Modernization: Direct strategic roadmap and technical execution to migrate legacy data assets, stored procedures, and pipelines from SQL Server DWH and Snowflake into Microsoft Fabric, ensuring zero business disruption, strict data validation, and eventual legacy platform decommissioning
  • Team Leadership, Mentorship and Talent Growth: Direct, mentor, and build a high-performing team of data analysts, ETL developers, and API specialists, upskilling team members on modern Fabric engineering patterns and fostering a culture of technical craftsmanship and shared accountability
  • Caterpillar Related Data: Lead strategy, development, and operationalization of Caterpillar connected-machine telemetry and various other datasets within Microsoft Fabric, transforming high-volume equipment diagnostics into scalable data products and actionable insights that drive service, parts, sales, and operational decision-making
  • Generative AI and Semantic Layer Readiness: Expose and govern enterprise data models within Fabric (utilizing Direct Lake mode and semantic models) so internal business users and AI tools (Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic Claude, custom LLMs) can securely interact with operational data in real-time
  • ETL, API and System Integration Services: Oversee robust, real-time and batch integration services linking Dynamics 365, Caterpillar corporate applications, third-party software, and external partner ecosystems
  • Data Governance, Security and FinOps: Drive continuous operational discipline across data operations enforcing unified data governance, role-based security access, data lineage, and strict monitoring of Microsoft Fabric capacity units (CUs) to maximize query performance while optimizing cloud costs
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner seamlessly with Director of IT Business Partnership, peer IT leaders, Carter operational heads, Accenture consultants, and Caterpillar technical teams to align data engineering deliverables with business transformation goals and required metrics
  • Data Strategy and Roadmap: Partner with Director of IT Business Partnership, and other IT Delivery Leaders to ensure business processes, data governance, reporting, and technology solutions are aligned to support operational decision-making and future AI and Analytics capabilities
  • Operational and Financial Excellence Analytics: Collaboratively design, build, and maintain enterprise scorecards, operational dashboards, key performance indicators (KPIs), financial metrics, and executive reports across all parts of the company
  • Analytics Team Management and Mentorship: Direct, coach, and elevate data analysts and BI engineers in reporting best practices, metric standardization, data visualization standards, and domain-driven analytics, turning raw data into strategic business insights
  • Work in coordination with team to achieve Continuous Improvement goals and objectives
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum seven years of progressive leadership experience in data engineering, data architecture, or enterprise analytics
  • Modern Data Architecture and Migration Expertise: Deep hands-on and architectural experience with Microsoft Fabric (or Azure Synapse/Databricks), SQL Server Data Warehousing, Snowflake, and executing legacy-to-modern cloud platform migrations
  • ETL/ELT and Integration Mastery: Advanced knowledge of data integration frameworks, REST/GraphQL API management, and automated pipeline orchestration (e.g., Fabric Data Factory, Dataflows Gen2, PySpark)
  • AI and Semantic Modeling Readiness: Practical experience structuring enterprise semantic models, RAG architecture prerequisites, and data access layers for AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and Claude
  • Connected Asset / IoT Data: Familiarity with high-volume telemetry, machine edge data streams, and converting equipment signals into field service and operational value
  • FinOps and Capacity Management: Demonstrated capability in monitoring and managing cloud platform spend, compute capacity optimization, and resource governance
  • Mentorship and Team Elevation: Proven capability to coach analysts and developers, establish engineering standards, document architecture, and eliminate single-points-of-failure
  • Track record of architecting modern cloud data platforms, executing complex enterprise DWH migrations, managing specialized engineering talent and delivering actionable business intelligence within complex, asset-heavy or equipment dealer operations
  • Demonstrated track record of leading large-scale enterprise data warehouse migration projects
  • Superior communication skills: able to explain the "Why" of modern data architecture to operational leaders and the "How" to senior data engineers
  • Valid driver's license
  • Excellent driving record
  • Travel: Up to 20% travel across Carter branches, Caterpillar facilities, and vendor sites
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required during major system migrations, deployments, or go-live milestones.

What Success Looks Like In This Role:
  • Leading design, governance, and deployment of Carter's Microsoft Fabric enterprise environment
  • Directing strategic roadmap and technical execution to migrate legacy data assets, stored procedures, and pipelines
  • Directing, mentoring, and building a high-performing team of data analysts, ETL developers, and API specialists
  • Leading strategy, development, and operationalization of Caterpillar connected-machine telemetry and various other datasets
  • Exposing and governing enterprise data models within Fabric (utilizing Direct Lake mode and semantic models) so internal business users and AI tools (Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic Claude, custom LLMs) can securely interact with operational data in real-time
  • Successful oversight of robust, real-time and batch integration services
  • Driving continuous operational discipline across data operations
  • Defining problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Good attention to detail
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands
