Title: Director, Advanced Analytics Architecture & Operations

Job Description

Gilead's mission is to discover, develop, and deliver therapies that will improve the lives of patients with life-threatening illnesses worldwide. Gilead Sciences is seeking a Director, Advanced Analytics to lead the strategy, delivery, and evolution of advanced analytics capabilities within the Data Science Development Systems team. This role is responsible for shaping and executing the technology roadmap for analytics platforms, data science enablement, GenAI solutions that support clinical development and broader business priorities. The Director will provide strategic and technical leadership to cross-functional teams, partner closely with business and technology stakeholders, and guide engineering teams in delivering scalable, compliant, and high-impact solutions.

This is a site based position at our global headquarters in Foster City, CA.

Specific duties, job functions:

  • Define and execute advanced analytics technology strategy, translating business priorities into scalable, compliant, and high-value analytics solutions.
  • Partner with the business to set technology vision for GenAI and advanced analytics initiatives, examples like large-scale medical imaging analytics, and other emerging data science capabilities.
  • Lead the open-source strategy for CDS,including evaluating and governing open-source tools, frameworks, and communities to accelerate innovation while ensuring security, compliance, sustainability, and alignment with enterprise technology standards.
  • Partner with IT and business leaders to collaborate and align on an overall AI and analytics strategy, ensuring clear prioritization, architectural consistency, governance, and delivery of capabilities that support development and broader business objectives.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to engineering and analytics delivery teams, ensuring effective execution of key initiatives, alignment with stakeholder needs, and delivery of robust, enterprise-ready solutions.

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. or advanced degree in a technical, scientific, or quantitative discipline, with significant experience leading advanced analytics, data science, or enterprise analytics technology capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business, clinical, and scientific needs into strategic analytics solutions across advanced analytics, and data science domains.
  • Strong ability to integrate deep functional expertise, technical judgment, and life sciences domain knowledge to influence strategy, investment decisions, and delivery priorities.
  • Proven experience leading technical, engineering, or analytics teams, including setting direction, developing talent, and driving execution through ambiguity.
  • Extensive experience delivering scalable, secure, and compliant cloud-native analytics platforms, including use of Infrastructure-as-Code, automation, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Working knowledge of modern analytics technologies, including Python, relational databases, cloud data platforms, and data science enablement tools, with the ability to guide technical teams and evaluate architectural trade-offs.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and operationalizing AI, machine learning, or GenAI capabilities, including establishing governance, prioritizing high-value use cases, and guiding teams in responsible, compliant adoption.
  • Experience establishing and scaling MLOps practices, including model lifecycle management, deployment automation, monitoring, governance, and cross-functional operating models that enable reliable and compliant production use of machine learning solutions.
  • Proficiency in agile development methodologies.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the biotech/life sciences industry, or another highly regulatedindustry.
  • Understanding of drug development phases and the nature of associated clinical trials across phases.
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning workflows and MLOps.
  • Experience with High Performance Compute technology.

The salary range for this position is: $226,185.00 - $292,710.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
