Job description

The Directional Drill Operator Locator is responsible for assisting the Drill Operator in locating drill head and drilling in accordance with blueprints to verify locate marks and confirm location of existing facilities.

As a Directional Drill Locator, you will interpret the signals sent from underground transmitters about location, angle, temperature, and other factors for the drill operator, who operates the drill.

  • Set up and calibrate directional drilling equipment, including locating devices, guidance systems, and survey tools.
  • Perform pre-drilling surveys to determine the appropriate drilling path and identify potential obstacles or hazards.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other team members to plan and execute directional drilling projects.
  • Implement measures to minimize environmental impact during drilling.
  • Identify and address any challenges or obstacles encountered during drilling.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of drilling equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety compliance.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols during drilling operations to minimize risks and prevent accidents.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues or challenges that arise during drilling operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of drilling activities, equipment usage, and project progress.
  • Collaborate with the installation team to assist with fiber optic cable pulling, splicing, and testing as needed.

Salary Range:

$26.00 to $31.00 per hour

This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Proven experience as a Directional Drill Locator in the telecommunications or utility industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of directional drilling techniques, equipment, and familiarity with survey tools, guidance systems, and tracking.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and environmental considerations related to drilling activities.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate various types of construction equipment and tools.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and procedures related to driving and construction work.
  • Physically fit and capable of performing manual labor tasks in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • A valid CDL License with a satisfactory driving record
