Job description

BCOMM is seeking a skilled and experienced Horizontal Directional Driller (HDD) to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining drilling equipment to install underground utilities using horizontal directional drilling methods. The role requires technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality work.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate HDD machinery and equipment to drill and install underground utilities, such as fiber optics, gas, water, or electrical lines.
  • Interpret project plans, blueprints, and utility maps to ensure accurate drilling paths and safe operations.
  • Perform pre-drill inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure proper equipment setup.
  • Monitor and adjust drilling parameters, such as speed, pressure, and alignment, to achieve optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with the crew to locate drill paths, install conduit, and complete bore paths.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to drilling operations, equipment, or job site conditions.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on drilling equipment to minimize downtime and maintain efficiency.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Document work progress, job site conditions, and any changes to project plans.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school education is a plus.
  • Proven experience as an HDD Driller, with knowledge of directional drilling techniques and equipment.
  • Familiarity with locating equipment and drilling fluid systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and utility maps.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Commitment to safety and ability to enforce safety practices on-site.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical stamina to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift heavy equipment as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is highly desirable.
  • Certification or training in HDD operations or related fields.
  • Experience with Vermeer or Ditch Witch drilling equipment.
