Job description

The Foreman is expected to lead by example, maintain a strong safety culture, coordinate crew activities and equipment, and ensure quality workmanship on every job.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and oversee daily activities of the directional boring crew.
  • Conduct and/or participate in daily job briefings and ensure all crew members understand the scope of work, job hazards, and safety procedures.
  • Ensure proper utility locating and verification procedures are completed before beginning boring operations.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, prints, staking, specifications, and work orders.
  • Supervise the setup and operation of directional boring equipment and related machinery.
  • Monitor bore paths, depth, and alignment to ensure work is completed according to project specifications.
  • Coordinate potholing, utility verification, locating, and excavation activities as necessary.
  • Ensure crew members properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Enforce company safety policies, customer requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Monitor crew performance and provide guidance, training, and coaching as needed.
  • Assign tasks to crew members based on job requirements and individual skill levels.
  • Ensure all work is completed to quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Inspect equipment, tools, vehicles, and work areas to identify safety concerns or maintenance needs.
  • Report equipment issues and coordinate necessary repairs or maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, production records, time records, equipment inspections, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate daily job progress, delays, material needs, and issues to management and customers as required.
  • Coordinate with utility representatives, inspectors, subcontractors, property owners, and other project personnel.
  • Ensure work sites are properly secured and restored upon completion of the work.
  • Respond appropriately to changing job conditions, emergencies, equipment failures, and unexpected underground conditions.
  • Promote professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of directional boring, underground utility, or related construction experience.
  • Previous experience operating and/or supervising directional drilling or boring equipment preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and crew management experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of underground utility construction and directional boring practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility locates, construction drawings, and job specifications.
  • Working knowledge of underground utility identification and safe excavation practices.
  • Ability to safely operate or oversee the operation of directional boring equipment and associated equipment.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred, depending on equipment and job requirements.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, nights, and travel as required by the needs of the company.

Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Lift and/or move materials and equipment as required by the job.
  • Work around heavy equipment, moving vehicles, excavation areas, underground utilities, and other construction hazards.
  • Work extended hours and varying schedules as required.

Work Environment
This position primarily works in outdoor construction environments and may be exposed to extreme temperatures, rain, mud, dust, noise, heavy equipment, and other job-site hazards. The position may require frequent travel, overnight stays, overtime, and emergency or storm-related work.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Directional Boring Crew Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day supervision, direction, and safety of assigned crew members.
