Direct To Garment information

What are some typical challenges faced in a direct to garment (DTG) printing role, and how can I prepare for them?

In a Direct To Garment printing role, common challenges include managing machine maintenance, ensuring consistent print quality, and troubleshooting color or alignment issues. You'll often need to balance tight deadlines with attention to detail, particularly when handling custom or short-run orders. Staying organized and learning to calibrate and care for DTG equipment are essential skills. Collaborating closely with designers and production teams will help you address potential issues early and deliver high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a direct to garment (DTG) printer operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Direct to Garment (DTG) Printer Operator, you need knowledge of textile printing processes, color management, and garment materials, often backed by experience in print production or a related field. Familiarity with DTG printing machines, RIP software, and graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing orders and maintaining print quality. These skills ensure precise, high-quality output and timely fulfillment in a fast-moving custom apparel environment.

What is the difference between Direct To Garment vs Screen Printer?

AspectDirect To GarmentScreen Printer
Primary MethodDigital printing directly onto fabricApplying ink through a mesh screen onto fabric
EquipmentDTG printerScreen printing presses and screens
Design ComplexityBest for detailed, multi-color imagesIdeal for simple, bold designs with fewer colors
Production SpeedSlower for large runs, faster for custom jobsFaster for bulk production of simple designs
CostHigher initial investment, lower per-unit cost for small runsLower setup costs, economical for large quantities

Both Direct To Garment and Screen Printing are popular methods for customizing apparel. DTG excels at detailed, multi-color designs and small batch runs, while Screen Printing is more efficient for large quantities of simple designs. Choosing between them depends on your production needs and design complexity.

What is direct to garment (DTG) printing?

Direct To Garment (DTG) printing is a method of printing digital designs directly onto textiles, typically t-shirts or other apparel, using specialized inkjet technology. This process allows for high-resolution, full-color designs to be printed quickly and efficiently without the need for screens or setup fees. DTG is especially popular for short runs and custom orders because it can reproduce intricate images with a soft feel on the fabric. It is most effective on 100% cotton garments, as they absorb the water-based inks better.

Job description

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Nike Energy is looking for a bold, open-minded Product Graphic Designer to help shape the future of our brand through groundbreaking collaborations across apparel and footwear. The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguity-someone who approaches the unknown with curiosity and transforms challenges into creative opportunities through collaboration.
This role demands a designer who balances art and science-blending cultural insight, visual innovation, and technical craft. You'll deliver design solutions that connect trend, design, development, and manufacturing in partnership with both internal and external teams.
WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON & WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
You'll report directly to the ENERGY - Graphic Design Director and work alongside Graphic peers, Footwear and Apparel Designers, Color Designers, Materials Designers, Developers, and Product Line Managers. Your focus will be creating original graphics, prints, trims, and packaging that meet each product's unique needs. Every project is its own world-and you'll help weave those worlds together with Nike's vision.
WHAT YOU BRING
Ideal candidates are creative problem solvers who are passionate about design, thrive in fast-paced collaboration, and bring powerful, emotionally resonant ideas to life.
  • To be considered, you must submit a creative design portfolio. Please provide website links or attach PDF files when you apply.
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field. Will accept any suitable combination of education, experience, and training.
  • 1- 4+ years of directly relevant work experience.
  • Genuine passion for current and emerging design trends-including contemporary art, sports, streetwear, and youth culture.
  • Proven ability to create concepts, iterate, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary product and creative team.
  • Ability to translate insights into authentic narratives and visual storytelling.
  • Adaptability to change and skill in balancing multiple, competing priorities.
  • Strong visual and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present design intent effectively to internal and external audiences.
  • Proficiency in graphic design fundamentals: drawing/sketching, typography, ideation, use of texture, spacing, scale, visual presentation development, and layout-supported by a portfolio that includes non-digital creative work.
  • Knowledge of apparel graphic application, repeat pattern creation, printing techniques for textiles, trim design, and how designs translate from digital to physical.
  • Understanding of apparel product creation and basic garment construction.
  • Ability to embrace diverse perspectives and foster an inclusive environment.
  • Awareness of Nike's brand, design ethos, and cultural relevance; ability to create original graphics that reflect Nike's design DNA.
  • Proficiency in Adobe CC and comfort working in emerging digital spaces.
  • Open-minded and resilient problem-solving skills.

We offer a number of accommodations to complete our interview process including screen readers, sign language interpreters, accessible and single location for in-person interviews, closed captioning, and other reasonable modifications as needed. If you discover, as you navigate our application process, that you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, please complete the Candidate Accommodation Request Form.
