What is a direct mail specialist?

A direct mail specialist is a professional responsible for planning, creating, and managing direct mail marketing campaigns. They work with businesses to design mail pieces, develop target mailing lists, and coordinate the production and distribution of printed materials to reach specific audiences. Their goal is to generate customer interest, increase sales, and build brand awareness using physical mail as a marketing channel. They often analyze campaign results to optimize future mailings and ensure compliance with postal regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a direct mail specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Direct Mail Specialist, you need expertise in marketing strategy, data analysis, and campaign management, usually supported by a background in marketing or communications. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, direct mail automation tools, and postal regulations is important. Strong project management, attention to detail, and communication skills help coordinate with vendors and ensure campaign accuracy. These skills ensure effective targeting, cost efficiency, and successful execution of direct mail campaigns that drive customer engagement.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in direct mail campaigns, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in direct mail is ensuring your message stands out amid a crowded mailbox and yields a measurable ROI. Professionals often need to balance creativity in design with data-driven targeting to maximize response rates. Addressing these challenges involves staying current with postal regulations, leveraging customer data for personalized content, and continuously testing different formats and offers. Collaborating closely with graphic designers, copywriters, and data analysts is also essential for creating effective campaigns that resonate with the target audience.

Job description

S'more about the team

HelloFresh is looking for a Growth Marketing Specialist, Direct Mail to help drive the growth and performance of our Direct Mail channel across our Canadian brands: HelloFresh, Chefs Plate, and Factor. This is a hands-on role for someone who takes ownership of their work, thinks in numbers, and enjoys turning data into clear actions that drive growth.

Reporting to the Growth Marketing Manager, you will be responsible for planning, executing, and optimizing Direct Mail acquisition campaigns that deliver against volume, CAC, ROI, and efficiency goals. You will help manage campaign operations from end to end, including audience planning, creative coordination, vendor management, budgeting, forecasting, execution, reporting, and post-campaign analysis.

You will work closely with internal teams and external partners to improve channel performance, scale what works, and identify new opportunities for growth. If you are someone who holds yourself accountable to results, enjoys solving problems, and wants to directly influence customer acquisition, this role is for you.

Lettuce share what this role will be responsible for

  • Campaign Execution & Operations: Support the planning and execution of Direct Mail campaigns from start to finish, including audience planning, creative coordination, print production, vendor timelines, deployment, QA, and post-campaign follow-up.
  • Performance Analysis & Optimization: Track campaign results across key metrics including volume, CAC, ROI, conversion, payback, and budget efficiency. Turn performance insights into clear recommendations that improve future campaigns.
  • Testing & Growth: Contribute to the Direct Mail testing roadmap across audiences, creative, formats, offers, timing, and other campaign levers. Help identify what is working, what is not, and where we should focus next.
  • Creative & Cross-Functional Coordination: Work with Brand, Creative, Product Marketing, Analytics, Finance, and broader Growth teams to ensure campaigns are accurate, on brand, and aligned with business goals.
  • Vendor & Partner Management: Manage day-to-day communication with external partners, including printers, agencies, and data partners, to ensure campaigns are delivered accurately, on time, and cost-effectively.
  • Process Improvement & AI-First Ways of Working: Look for opportunities to reduce manual work, improve workflows, and make the channel run more efficiently. Use AI tools to automate repetitive tasks, summarize insights, improve reporting, and free up time for higher-impact work.
  • Budgeting & Administrative Ownership: Support key operational tasks including voucher creation, invoicing, cost tracking, campaign trackers, and monthly targeting file preparation.
  • Market Awareness: Stay current on direct mail, offline marketing, consumer behaviour, and competitor activity, and bring forward fresh ideas that can help improve channel performance.
  • All other duties, as assigned.
