What is a dining assistant?

Dining assistants are professionals who support the serving of food and beverages in settings like care homes, hospitals, schools, and restaurants. Their role typically includes setting up dining areas, helping with meal service, assisting individuals who need help eating, and maintaining cleanliness. They play a key part in ensuring meal times are enjoyable and efficient, especially for people who may require additional support. Dining assistants also follow hygiene and safety regulations to ensure a safe dining environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dining assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dining Assistant, you need basic food service knowledge, attention to hygiene, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, food safety protocols, and sometimes a food handler certification is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and a friendly demeanor help create a positive dining experience for guests. These skills ensure efficient service, safety compliance, and customer satisfaction in busy dining environments.

What are some common challenges faced by dining assistants, and how can they be effectively managed?

Dining Assistants often work in fast-paced environments where multitasking and effective communication are essential. Common challenges include managing multiple tables during busy meal times, handling special dietary needs, and ensuring customer satisfaction under time constraints. To manage these challenges effectively, it's important to stay organized, prioritize tasks, and maintain a positive attitude even during high-pressure periods. Collaborating closely with kitchen staff and fellow servers also helps ensure smooth service and a supportive team environment.

Job Description

In-room dining is not a convenience, it is a curated, elevated extension of our culinary experience. Leading it requires intention, discretion, and an intuitive understanding of how guests want to feel in their private space.

As In-Room Dining Manager, you’ll oversee an operation that blends restaurant-level food and beverage with quiet precision, emotional intelligence, and impeccable timing. You’ll shape In-Room Dining as a calm, seamless, and indulgent experience, from order taking to delivery, ensuring every interaction feels thoughtful, unrushed, and deeply considered.

Start Date: August 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
What You'll Be Doing:

Operational Excellence

  • Lead the day-to-day operation of In-Room Dining, ensuring exceptional quality, consistency, and service standards.
  • Oversee daily order flow, timing, and delivery to ensure precise, quiet, and seamless service.
  • Maintain service standards that prioritize discretion, privacy, and emotional awareness.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, liquor legislation, health regulations and brand standards
  • Partner with Culinary to design menus and offerings that travel well, hold quality, and feel complete in-room.
  • Oversee amenity, VIP and special occasion programs, ensuring thoughtful execution and exceptional presentation.
  • Ensure wellness-forward, dog-friendly, and privacy-led standards are consistently upheld.
  • Manage mini-market / honour-style self-serve concepts on guest floors.
  • Respond confidently and professionally to guest feedback, resolving concerns with empathy and urgency.
  • Partner closely with Culinary, Stewarding, Front Office, Housekeeping and Guest Services to deliver flawless guest experiences.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Inspire, coach and develop a high-performing team through ongoing training, feedback and recognition.
  • Foster a culture of calm professionalism, pride, and accountability.
  • Lead by example, setting the tone for service pacing, communication, and guest care.
  • Manage scheduling, labour productivity and payroll in alignment with business volumes.
Qualifications

What You Bring

• Leadership experience in luxury hospitality, in-room dining, room service, or fine dining operations.
• A strong understanding of service pacing, guest psychology, privacy, and discretion.

• Alberta ProServe certification required

Bonus If You Bring

• Experience with Forbes, LQA, or similar luxury service standards.
• A background in wellness-focused or lifestyle hospitality environments.
• Creative experience with curated amenities, VIP experiences, or personalized guest moments.
• A desire to redefine in-room dining as a modern, elevated experience.

Who You Are

You’re composed, intuitive, and guest-obsessed. You understand that luxury often lives in restraint, timing, and tone. You lead with presence rather than volume, and you’re deeply attuned to how service makes people feel. You thrive in environments that require discretion, adaptability, and emotional intelligence, and you take pride in delivering excellence quietly, consistently, and with care.

Lead with intention. Serve with discretion. Stay moved.
