Job description

W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. is seeking an Editorial Assistant, High School and Humanities, to join its College Editorial Department. This is a full-time, entry level position based out of Norton's headquarters in NYC.

High School & Humanities Editorial Assistant

The Editorial Assistant will work with the College Editorial Group and the High School Editorial Group on adaptations of select textbooks from the college discipline teams and high school original textbooks across the following disciplines: English Literature and English Composition; American, World, and European History; U.S. and Comparative Government; Psychology; Music Theory; and select science subjects.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Management of manuscripts in all stages of production; preparing manuscripts for copyediting and production; preparing manuscripts for digital tools like Smartwork and Testmaker.
  • Reading and reacting quickly to professional communications from authors and instructors.
  • Professionally interacting with authors, production, marketing, and sales staff to relay messages, follow-up on requests/information and in general, anticipating when to proactively act on messages.
  • Administrative management: organizing and maintaining files; tracking manuscripts; printing and emailing; and maintaining High School Editorial tracking documents.
  • Management of review programs and surveys.
  • Tracking and processing authoring contracts and payments.
  • Managing text and photo permissions with authors and the permissions departments.
  • Generating promotional copy for catalogs, book covers, and sales-related materials.
  • Creating and editing Excel and Word documents to support projects and/or office responsibilities.
  • Line editing manuscripts and contributing to overall publishing strategy of individual titles.
  • Assisting with additional projects as needed, such as scheduling meetings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communications skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented, making sure that all aspects of their daily activities are handled with accuracy, with minimal mistakes.
  • Must be able to anticipate needs and deliver timely, relevant solutions and actions.
  • Must be able to develop rapport and relationships with all levels of employees.
  • Must be seen as knowledgeable and capable of handling sensitive, critical information.
  • Must be proactive, flexible and adaptive in a rapidly changing environment and adjust with a "can-do" attitude.
  • Must be self-directed and independent.
  • Must have good time management skills, be organized, and be capable of multi-tasking across departments, activities, and projects.
  • Mastery of email and calendar management tools required.
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel.
  • Must be able to work regular business hours from our New York City headquarters. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.
  • Experience working in a writing center or otherwise providing feedback on peers' writing a plus.

  • Annual compensation for this position is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
