What is digital taxonomy?

Digital taxonomy refers to the structured classification and organization of digital assets, information, or data, typically within a digital platform or content management system. It involves creating a system of categories, tags, or metadata to make digital content easier to find, manage, and analyze. Effective digital taxonomy ensures that users can efficiently search for and retrieve information, improving both user experience and business processes. Professionals in this field often work with marketing, data management, or IT teams to develop and maintain these systems.

What is the difference between Digital Taxonomy vs Content Strategist?

AspectDigital TaxonomyContent Strategist

Digital Taxonomy and Content Strategist roles overlap in digital content management but differ in focus. Digital Taxonomy centers on organizing digital information systematically, while Content Strategists develop content plans to engage audiences. Both roles are vital in digital environments but serve distinct functions within organizations.

How to become a digital taxonomist?

To become a digital taxonomist, develop expertise in information organization, classification systems, and data management, often through degrees in library science, information science, or related fields. Gaining skills in data analysis, taxonomy tools, and metadata standards, along with practical experience in digital content management, is essential for this role.

How does a digital taxonomy specialist typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate data categorization?

Digital Taxonomy specialists frequently work alongside product managers, UX designers, content strategists, and developers to create and maintain classification systems that organize digital content effectively. They facilitate workshops, gather feedback from stakeholders, and translate business requirements into structured taxonomies. Regular meetings and clear documentation help ensure everyone is aligned on naming conventions, metadata standards, and tagging processes. This collaborative approach is essential to maintain consistency and usability across digital platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in digital taxonomy?

To thrive in Digital Taxonomy, you need expertise in information architecture, metadata standards, content classification, and a background in library science, information management, or a related field. Familiarity with taxonomy management tools (like PoolParty or Smartlogic), content management systems, and data governance frameworks is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure taxonomies are user-friendly and meet organizational needs. These skills ensure accurate organization, retrieval, and governance of digital assets, which is critical for optimizing content discoverability and business efficiency.

Job description

Primary Work Address: 4000 Jones Bridge Road, Chevy Chase, MD, 20815
Current HHMI Employees, click here to apply via your Workday account.
HHMI is focused on supporting and moving science forward in a variety of different ways ranging from conducting basic biomedical research, empowering educators, inspiring students, developing the next generation of scientists - even stretching into film and media production. Our Headquarters is in the greater Washington, DC metro area and is home to over 300 employees with expertise in investments, communications, digital production, biomedical sciences, and everything in between. The work housed here supports and augments the groundbreaking research conducted in HHMI labs across the nation. As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working here are making a difference.
Summary of the Role
This is a role for someone who moves fluidly between analytics and systems, and who wants to architect and build the intelligence layer that tells a team what's actually working.
HHMI's Marketing and Digital Communications team shapes how the Institute's research, programs, and opportunities reach the scientists, students, educators, and grantees who rely on them, as well as the general public. That work runs across web, email, social, paid media, and in-person channels. Today the team can track performance across each of those channels, but is missing deep visibility and insight into how audiences move between them, and how effectively content and strategy decisions are paying off.
You are the person who builds that view, from the ground up. You own the data systems, the analytics infrastructure, and the measurement architecture that show how audiences find, experience, and move through HHMI's digital ecosystem. That means standing up systems that don't exist yet: leading the CRM and CDP implementation from vendor evaluation through integration, designing the cross-channel measurement architecture, governing UTM taxonomy and analytics configuration, tracking search and AI visibility, and building the audience segmentation and dashboards that keep the full team oriented. You work in close partnership with the Director and Content and Digital Experience Senior Manager, turning what the data shows into decisions the team can act on.
This is not a pure analytics role or a pure systems role. It takes deep, career-level expertise and comfort operating on both sides at once: the build capability sets the floor, and the analytics fluency builds on it.
What You Will Actually Do
  • Build and own the analytics infrastructure. Design, stand up, and evolve HHMI's digital analytics, including conversion event tracking, journey dashboards, and UTM taxonomy governance, building what is not there yet rather than inheriting a finished stack. This is single ownership with active enforcement, not shared stewardship.

  • Architect the whole ecosystem, not the channels. Design and build the cross-channel measurement and event-tracking architecture, a single view of how audiences move across web, email, social, paid media, and events together. Find the handoffs, the drop-off points, and the channels that are over- or under-leveraged relative to what audiences actually need, and use that to steer where investment and content strategy go next.

  • Run search and AI visibility. Own the program that monitors how HHMI and its programs show up across traditional search and AI platforms. Layer the findings to spot patterns, opportunities, and risks, and flag shifts that change what the team should do about content and experience.

  • Architect and stand up the CRM and CDP. Lead HHMI's CRM and CDP from the ground up, evaluate and select vendors, design the data model and identity resolution, and own the integration patterns that tie them to the rest of the stack. Stand up the platform from scratch, then serve as its primary day-to-day administrator. Partner with the Marketing Manager on list architecture, segmentation, intake forms, and data governance.

  • Own the integration architecture. Connect CRM, CDP, analytics, email, and the website into one coherent, well-governed stack, with clean data flowing between systems by design rather than held together by manual exports.

  • Build measurement into the website redesign. Serve as the measurement and discoverability architect inside HHMI's ongoing website redesign, so tracking, attribution, and AI discoverability are built into the foundation rather than bolted on afterward.

  • Run email as real infrastructure. Manage and evolve the underlying infrastructure of HHMI's email marketing in Mailchimp, including attribution, list management, and integration with the CRM as that system matures.

  • Build the reporting the team runs on. Give the full team a clear view of how audiences find and move through HHMI's channels, including a real comparison of paid and organic performance across sources. Present findings regularly and translate them into plain insight for non-technical people.

  • Lay the groundwork for audience modeling. As the CRM and analytics mature, build the segmentation models that reflect how different groups find, evaluate, and act on HHMI opportunities. Audit the behavioral data HHMI already has, and build the collection infrastructure that future audience modeling will require.

What We Are Looking For
  • Both sides of the house. Brings 8 to 10 years across digital analytics and marketing operations inside a matrixed organization, and is as comfortable configuring a system as reading what it produces.

  • Insight, not report-pulling. Turns data into decisions people can act on. Anyone can export a dashboard. Knows which number matters this week and why.

  • Builder first, operator second. Has stood up CRM and CDP platforms, not just administered them, and ideally led an implementation end to end: vendor selection, data model, integration. Running an existing stack is table stakes here; building one is the point.

  • Thinks in systems. Data models, integration patterns, identity resolution, and governance are how this role approaches a problem. Builds for maintainability, not one-off fixes.

  • Fluent where search is going. Knows SEO and AEO and search performance analysis, and understands how search visibility and AI discoverability are converging into one discipline.

  • Tagging is second nature. UTM taxonomy, campaign tracking, and pixel tracking (Meta Pixel, Reddit Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag) are familiar ground, and this role is comfortable owning data governance without being told how.

  • Fluent across audiences. Works across content, marketing, and technology teams, driving standards and change across groups not directly managed, and can explain a data finding to a non-technical stakeholder without losing the substance.

  • Education and experience. HHMI is ultimately looking for depth rather than a fixed number of years: what matters is genuine command of building and owning marketing technology systems, digital analytics, and the search and AI visibility landscape.

What This Role Is Not
  • A pure analytics role. This role builds and owns the systems, not just reports on them.

  • A pure systems role. Standing up the platform is half the job. The other half is telling the team what the data means.

  • An administrator's seat. This is not inheriting a finished stack to keep running. This role is here to build what is not there yet, then own it.

  • A report-runner's seat. The point is not simply to produce dashboards on request. It is to own the intelligence function and push it forward.

  • A single-channel specialist role. The job is to see the whole ecosystem at once, not to go deep on one channel in isolation.
