While both roles involve digital design and similar skills, Digital System Design Engineers focus on creating complete digital systems and architectures, whereas Digital Hardware Engineers concentrate on designing specific hardware components and circuits. Both roles are essential in electronics and semiconductor industries, often collaborating on projects.

What is a digital system design engineer?

Digital System Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test digital circuits and systems, such as microprocessors, embedded systems, and digital communication devices. They use hardware description languages (HDLs) like VHDL or Verilog to create and simulate digital logic. Their work often involves collaborating with software engineers and hardware teams to ensure that digital systems function efficiently and reliably. These engineers play a crucial role in industries like electronics, telecommunications, and computing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital system design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital System Design Engineer, you need a strong background in digital electronics, logic design, and hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools like Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus, or ModelSim, along with knowledge of FPGA and ASIC design flows, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensuring reliable, efficient, and innovative digital systems that meet complex project requirements.

What are some common challenges digital system design engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Digital System Design Engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex system requirements, ensuring interoperability between various hardware and software components, and meeting strict deadlines. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as software developers, hardware engineers, and verification specialists—is crucial for resolving integration issues and maintaining project alignment. Staying up-to-date with evolving technology standards and tools also plays a significant role in overcoming these challenges and delivering robust digital systems.

This role partners with FSQA, Operations, IT, and business stakeholders to translate business processes into scalable digital workflows, automation, and enterprise applications that improve compliance, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision making.
The ideal candidate combines technical software and systems development skills with an understanding of manufacturing operations and enterprise business systems. While development is the primary focus of this role, the position also shares responsibility for maintaining existing digital solutions and supporting users as the FSQA Digital Systems team continues to expand.
Job Duties:
  • Design, develop, configure, and support digital applications, workflows, automation, dashboards, and business logic that improve FSQA and manufacturing operations.
  • Translate operational and regulatory requirements into scalable digital solutions while supporting the organization's digital transformation initiatives.
  • Develop and support integrations between Quality Management Systems (QMS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), laboratory systems, and other enterprise platforms.
  • Assist in developing automation, data validation routines, APIs, and workflow logic that improve process efficiency, system connectivity, and data accuracy.
  • Application Development & Analytics
  • Support the development of intelligent digital solutions that automate business processes, evaluate quality records, improve compliance verification, and enhance operational visibility.
  • Contribute to data-driven applications, reporting tools, advanced analytics, and emerging technologies that improve decision-making across the organization.
  • System Support & Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain and enhance existing digital solutions by troubleshooting issues, implementing enhancements, optimizing workflows, and providing technical support to end users.
  • Identify opportunities to improve usability, increase automation, simplify business processes, and ensure long-term system stability.
  • Project Implementation
  • Participate in digital transformation projects through requirements gathering, solution design, development, testing, implementation, documentation, training, and post-deployment support.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to successfully deliver technical solutions that meet business objectives.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 2--5 years of experience developing, configuring, or supporting enterprise business systems, digital applications, or manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience with software development, scripting, workflow automation, or business application development using languages such as Python, SQL, JavaScript, Java, C#, or similar.
  • Experience working with enterprise databases, APIs, system integrations, or data pipelines.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple technical projects and priorities in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in food manufacturing or another regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting Quality Management Systems (QMS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), or enterprise data platforms.
  • Experience with workflow automation, enterprise analytics, AI-assisted business processes, or intelligent document processing.
