Job Summary
The Experienced Mechanical Engineer - Dynamic and Acoustics works under limited supervision and performs moderately complex, critical technical functions to execute BPMI's mission, with a primary focus on turbines and generators. Responsibilities include evaluating analysis and test data of rotating machinery to make engineering decisions and recommendations; performing rotodynamic analysis; conducting data analysis and signal processing on rotating machinery test data; and performing performance evaluations of rotating machinery to assess and optimize operating characteristics. This position requires knowledge and application of mechanical engineering principles, rotordynamics, vibration analysis, and data analysis techniques as applied to complex rotating equipment.
Essential Duties:
  • Evaluate analysis and test data of rotating machinery (turbines and generators) to make engineering decisions and recommendations.
  • Establish, track, and influence progress against schedule and performance goals and provide periodic status updates to management, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Resolve technical, logistical, and funding issues in area of cognizance.
  • Perform data analysis and signal processing on test data from rotating machinery.
  • Provide technical support and oversight for field operations.
  • Team with other engineers performing related phases of the technical work to ensure integration of activities and plans. Mentor and train lower-level employees.
  • Perform rotodynamic analytical evaluations which may include the development and application of computer models and resolution of issues.
  • Prepare revisions to technical manuals, reports, or procedures in accordance with NR Program quality standards.
  • Initiate, design, develop, and support the execution and implementation of engineering research and design projects.
  • Conduct technical negotiations with suppliers; conduct production reviews and quality surveillance; review and approve supplier designs and supporting technical reports on assigned components and equipment; develop and implement methods to improve supplier performance.
  • Perform design for affordability reviews and prepare cost estimates; perform analyses and evaluations of supplier designs for material suitability, reliability, and integrity.
  • Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions, or obtaining approval of funding.
  • Perform analysis to evaluate performance of rotating machinery.
  • Maintain awareness of industry developments and standards to lead technology development and machinery improvements.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience. Advanced degrees (e.g., Master's, Ph. D.) may be considered as a partial substitute for required experience, depending on the relevance to the position, but may not fulfill the entire experience requirement.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.

Preferred Job Requirements:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a focus in acoustics, rotordynamics, or vibration analysis.
  • Specialized training and experience in one of the following areas:
    • Rotordynamics
    • Fluid film bearings
    • Dynamic properties of labyrinth and other seals
    • Machinery acoustics
    • Machinery vibration
    • Experience with component data collection
    • Experience in digital signal processing
  • Familiarity with the following programming languages preferred: MATLAB, Python, Excel VBA
  • Familiarity with the following software tools preferred: XLTRC2/XLRotor, Dyrobes, ANSYS CFX, ANSYS Mechanical, NI Labview
  • ISO 18436-2 Category III (or higher Vibration Analysis Certification)
