What Are Jobs in Digital Pathology?

Jobs in digital pathology are primarily in healthcare and research fields and involve the study and interpretation of a digitized image containing pathology information. Digital pathology jobs in sales and marketing are also available as companies devise new technology for the healthcare industry. If you work in a digital pathology laboratory, your responsibilities include analyzing images, generating reports with test results, and using a variety of equipment and technology to examine materials and data. In a marketing role, you perform sales duties like promoting digital pathology products, leading teams to complete projects and improvements, monitoring production methods, and overseeing quality control.

What is digital pathology?

Digital pathology is the process of acquiring, managing, sharing, and interpreting pathology information—including slides and data—in a digital environment. This involves scanning traditional glass slides to create high-resolution digital images that can be viewed, analyzed, and shared electronically. Digital pathology enables pathologists to collaborate remotely, utilize advanced image analysis, and improve workflow efficiency. It is increasingly used in clinical diagnostics, research, and education to enhance accuracy and accessibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Digital Pathologist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Digital Pathologist, you need a robust background in pathology, digital imaging, and data analysis, typically supported by a medical degree and board certification in pathology. Familiarity with digital pathology platforms, whole slide imaging systems, and image analysis software is essential, and certification in digital pathology or informatics can be advantageous. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help professionals interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate diagnoses, efficient workflow integration, and the advancement of digital pathology practices in clinical and research settings.

How does a Digital Pathology professional typically collaborate with laboratory staff and IT teams?

Digital Pathology professionals regularly work alongside laboratory technologists to ensure that tissue slides are scanned accurately and that image quality meets diagnostic standards. They also collaborate closely with IT teams to maintain image databases, troubleshoot software or hardware issues, and implement new digital solutions. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as integrating digital systems often requires coordinating workflow changes and training staff on new technologies. This collaborative environment helps streamline pathology operations and supports accurate, timely diagnoses.

Responsibilities

The department of Radiology in Rochester, MN invites you to join the division of Breast Imaging and Intervention's clinical practice.  The practice includes digital breast tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, MRI, molecular breast imaging (MBI), contrast enhanced digital mammography (CEDM), multimodality image guided biopsies, and image guided wire and seed localizations.  The Division of Breast Imaging and Intervention is one of 16 divisions within the Department of Radiology and currently includes 20 breast imaging radiologists.  Our clinical practice is busy, with more than 30,000 screening mammograms, 12,000 diagnostic exams, 2,000 MRIs and nearly 4000 image guided procedures performed each year.  Our screening and diagnostic mammography practice is 100% tomosynthesis based.  We offer screening MBI, and staff a robust referral practice for patients presenting from elsewhere with abnormal imaging or clinical exam findings.  Our procedural practice offers biopsy using mammographic, ultrasound and MRI guidance, and we anticipate MBI guided procedures to be available later this year.
In addition to clinical care within Breast Imaging and Intervention, the candidate will participate within another established area of expertise in Radiology, home to nearly 200 radiologists.  Many opportunities exist and the Department of Radiology will work with candidates to identify an appropriate “second home” that meets candidate desires and expectations.  This model offers candidates the opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise outside of their primary focus.
Numerous research and educational opportunities are available.  Radiologists benefit from close working relationships with clinical colleagues, as well as strong physicist/scientist and administrative support.  At Mayo Clinic, our practice model includes resident and fellow education, as well as multidisciplinary opportunities such as tumor board presentations and scholarship activities to educate our clinicians.  Our multidisciplinary breast care practice includes frequent interaction with other members of the breast service line (surgery, oncology, pathology and breast clinic) to facilitate an individualized approach to patient care.
This opportunity offers a collegial work environment, a competitive benefits package, and an excellent quality of practice. Mayo Clinic is dedicated to recruiting and nurturing an exceptional team of diverse faculty and staff.  All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

Mayo Clinic is located in the heart of downtown Rochester, Minnesota, a vibrant, friendly city that provides a highly livable environment for more than 34,000 Mayo staff and students.
