What is digital nomad writing?

Digital nomad writing refers to working as a writer or content creator while traveling or living in various locations, often leveraging remote work opportunities. Digital nomad writers typically produce articles, blogs, copywriting, or other written content for clients or publications, all while using digital tools to work from anywhere with internet access. This lifestyle offers flexibility and the chance to explore new places, but it also requires strong self-discipline, time management skills, and the ability to adapt to changing environments. Common niches for digital nomad writers include travel, technology, business, lifestyle, and freelancing topics.

What are some common challenges digital nomad writers face when balancing work and travel, and how can they be managed?

Digital nomad writers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent internet connectivity, distractions in unfamiliar environments, and managing work-life boundaries while traveling. To address these, it's helpful to research coworking spaces or reliable cafes ahead of time, establish a flexible but structured daily routine, and use productivity tools to stay organized. Regular communication with clients or editors and setting clear expectations about availability can also help maintain professional relationships and workflow efficiency while on the move.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital nomad writer?

To thrive as a Digital Nomad Writer, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills along with proficiency in content creation across various formats. Familiarity with content management systems (like WordPress), SEO tools, and digital collaboration platforms is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear communication are essential soft skills for success while working remotely. These abilities are crucial to consistently deliver high-quality content, manage deadlines independently, and collaborate effectively with clients or teams from anywhere in the world.

  • Engage with clients to determine requirements, agree solutions, review documentation, agree test plans, and present results.
  • Design solutions during the presales stage and finalise designs during the project phase.
  • Create project documentation in line with requirements and planning, including:
    • Design documentation, including synoptics
    • Bills of Materials (BoMs)
    • Integration documentation for third-party solutions

  • Define and review configurations to ensure they meet design objectives.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and on-site acceptance testing (SAT) to ensure successful service delivery.
  • Troubleshoot issues through direct investigation or by coordinating with internal teams or manufacturers; may act as 3rd line support for internal teams.
  • Manage the handover to clients or in-house support staff, including training.

Qualification Requirements:

Essential

  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking, LAN and VLAN IP planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux.
  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network devices including switches, routers, access points, and associated cabling.
  • Troubleshooting and problem management experience in a networking environment.
  • Good understanding of RF environments.
  • Strong documentation skills using Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Thorough and logical approach to planning and implementation.
  • Very good communication skills, both technical and user-facing.

Desirable

  • CCNA certification.
  • Knowledge of mobile data networks.
  • Knowledge of railway certification requirements.
  • Linux Red Hat or Debian certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, IT, or Computing Engineering, or a related subject.
  • Understanding of IT/Telecom Operations and Maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of antenna design and antenna placement.

Other Essential Requirements

  • Fluency in both French and English.
  • Familiarity with industrial and maintenance processes in a railway environment is strongly preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to travel within North America (5-15% depending on project phase).
  • Ability to work onsite in train depots or shunting yards.

Key Behavioural Competencies
